Keep the Practical Fowl
One of the best of our practical as well as theoretical breeders
and writers on poultry matters. IL S. Babcock, says: "1 keep fowls
that are recognized as among the most useful in
the list of our thoroughbreds, ami at the same
time their beauty points are not lost sight of. in
Hush times, when business is booming and money
plentiful, both kinds of fowls sell well, the prac
tical and strictly fancy breeds; when hard times
come, as they do periodically, the fowls bred pri
marily lor their beauty sell slowly, while those
bred for their usefulness sell readily."
In \ iew of this fact, is it not the part of wis
dom for a young man just starling in the poultry
business to begin with practical fowls and to make
them his sole and his principal source of poultry
incomell there is some breed of strictly fancy
fowls that he feels lie can not be happy without,
let him breed a few of them, ;md only a few, in
addition to his regular line of practical chickens.
What is the reason that practical fowls sell
better in hard times than do the fancy breeds? The
asking of the question is almost a sufficient answer.
In hard times money can not be lavishly spent on ornamentation.
It must go for the necessities. -Most
of the poultry breeders are not
rich but moderately well to do,
and they depend upon their own
labor for their support. These peo
ple, knowing their slender incomes
may be made more slender by the
stringent times, very naturally
turn to poultry keeping for a part
of their support if they have spare
time in which to look after poul
try.
They are not looking for fancy tilings,
but are looking for bread winners. They
want the useful fowls, the ones that will
lay eggs and produce good strong bod
ies in a reasonable time, and so they
buy the practical fowls. If the poultry
man is breeding the practical kinds he
need not fear about a market, even in
hard times. Indeed, I believe hard times
in other branches of business tend to

throw business toward the practical

Os course. If he is a decent man He
will not allow himself to wish for such
conditions, but he can face them with
less fear than almost any other mem- I
ber of the body politic. He can not help |
knowing. If he is at all observing and i
has passed through these dull bmimss,
periods, that the closing down of mills
and the shutting down oi furnaces and '
all such things but turn men into his i

supply them with stock ami »-gg< for

be it understood, is not necessarily a *
fowl devoid of beauty. It is no mon

Mr. James T. McCrorey, of h- Mc-
Crorey Farm, Woodland, Ga., is In the
city attending the poultry show. The
McCrorey Farm is one of the largest
breeders of Indian Runner ducks (both
white and fawn and white) in the
South today. Mr. McCrorey had ills
birds in the Columbus show and took
away prizes galore. He was very sorry
he could not enter his birds in the
Southern International, but the entries
closed before he could enter. He feels
safe after taking first premium on
White Indian Runner pen at (’olumbus;
he could make the best of them “sit up
and take notice” if he could not take off
the "blue ribbon.”
The McCrorey birds have made a fine
showing wherever they have been
shown, and In most instances have had
unusually strong competition.
The McCrorey Farm reports fine
sales this season and are able to fur
