’5101,000 CHURCH
FDR ANSLEY PARK
• First Presbyterian Congrega-
tion to Build Edifice at Six
teenth and Peachtree.
Announcement was made today that I
, tile First Presbyterian church eongre
i gation will begin at once the erection
. of a $100,0(10 structure at the northwest
• 1 corner of Peachtree and Sixteenth
i streets, opposite the entrance to Ans- j
j ley Park.
A Sunday school room, facing on Six- j
■ . teenth street, will be included in this I
I price, but a manse on the same lot will •
[cost an additional SIO,OOO. The build-
< j ing committee, composed of S. W. Car-
■ son. John J. Woodside and T. B. Gay. .
will meet in a few days to select an
1 architect, and after plans are submit,-
1 ted the contract will be let. The
. churchmen expect to break ground in
the late winter or early spring.
Definite action was taken by leaders ,
, in tlie movement Thursday afternoon in
the offices of Judge William T. Newman
in the Federal building, since it. was
then decided not to wait for the sale
of the present site on Marietta street
before proceeding with the new struc
j ture. Members of the congregation ,
J came forward with assurances of sup
i port should financial stringency result,
but none is anticipated.
Among those present, in addition to
the building committee, were several
church officers, who are on the general ;
committee of elders, deacons, trustees
and church members- Judge Newman.
John W. Grant, Samuel Inman, Dr. J
G. Earnest. W. A. Speer. George W
Harrison. W. R. Hoyt and R. Uas- ;
! seis.
The present site Is 90 feet on Mariet- ,
' ta street, near Spring, and runs back
to the Western and Atlantic railroad.
The sale of this property will mean the
passing of another Atlanta landmark.
The First Presbyterian church has been
a house of worship for old Atlantans
since reconstruction days. Among the
present influential members not named
above are Colonel Robert J. Lowry,
.Captain James AV. English, W. ’l'. 1
Healey. W. B. Miles, Dr. John B. Dan
fel, Charles R. Winship, Harry Eng- ,
lish. and such men as the late Walker
P. Inman, the late Hugh T. Inman and .
th§ late Captain J. W. Rucker were
devoted members. Dr. Hugh K. Walk- 1
' er, formerly of Los Angeles, is the pas
tor.
The new edifice will be a model
among Atlanta churches. Considerable 1
attention will be given to accousties,
but the fittings will be simple, like the ,
old church which the congregation is
to leave.
Some years ago Hugh T. Inman gave
the church a manse on Third street
This has since been sold and the money
will be used for the new manse.
Peachtree beyond Fourteenth seems |
. destined to be quite a church section,
with the Christian Science church at
t-ht> corner of Peachtree circle and the
First Presbyterian a block away. There
is other activity in the neighborhood,
consisting of new and handsome dwell
ings and a magnificent apartment in I
prospect.
The church lot is 100 by 100 feet. It
was bought about eight months ago
Xron) Hollins Randolph, Mrs, Brady, of
Canton, Ga„ and a third party for a
.consideration of $47,000, or $470 a front
foot.

SANITY BF GUILD
SmjURTLD
Frankie Wilson. Aged 7. Who
Killed Playmate. Turned Over
to Probation Officer.
Convinced that F:ankle Wilson, sev-
I< n years old. who shot and killed a
; playmate. Elmonte Herndon, with a
i rifle at Carey Station December 7. is
not a normal child, Superior .Tudg-
I Pendleton today caused the lad to be
| turned over to the probation authori
ties and examined for his sanity.
"Th< testimony of these neighbors
show- that the boy is wayward," said
the jurist. "But he doesn't look or act
normal. I don’t believe he would see
any difference in shooting at a play
mate or at a pig.”
Young Wilson, a frail-looking lad,
with a sli >ck of red hair falling over his
fort-head and a pair of badly crossed
black < yes, which appeared tn take in
everything around him. came into court
with his fnster mother. Mrs. Laura
Wilson, at 11 o’clock.
Half the Suburb in Court.
Half the population of Carey Station
had taken a holiday and were crowded
in the court room, either as witnesses
or spectators.
One witness. Mrs. Jennie Arnold,
startled the eouri room when she shov
ed forward t« o y’llow-haired boyg,
neither over six years, as witnesses
ami refuted to let the court swear them
before telling their version of the story
because it was against her religious
principles.
"Now, you boys hoid up your hands
ami bo sworn,” said Judge Pendleton,
but neither moved an inch.
"I told them to keep their hands
down, judge." intervened Mis. Arnold.
"I am a Free Methodist and we don’t
believe in swearing. Tiler will affirm
their statement, but tlie Bible says that
it is wrong to take an oath."
Boys Not Allowed to Testify,
The Judge refused to allow the lads
to testify and the woman withdrew to
tlie edge of the crowd and spent the
rest ot her time distributing religious
tracts throughout the court room.
The most damaging testimony given
against young Wilson was that of Mrs.
L. Serrett and W. W inn. Mrs. Serrett
affirmed .that several days before the
Wilson boy shot young Herndon he had
threatened her son with the same rifle.
Winn asserted that the boy chewed to
bacco and srpoked.
Some of the testimony tended to shots
that young Herndon and Wilson were
not playing a game when the shooting
occurred, but Herndon was passing the
Wilson house and the Wilson boy shot,
him from the porch. Mrs. Wilson ad
mitted she was forced to leave the boy
at home with her aged mother during
the day while, she was at work.
