party in Savannah given by Miss Anna

TAFT TO BE ASKED
HOW BIG TO MAKE
‘PORK BARREL’ BILL
WASHINGTON, Dee. 25.—As soon
us President Taft returns from Panama
a subcommittee of the house on public
buildings will call on him to ascertain
his views on the size of the public
buildings “pork barrel” bill which will
be passed at this session of congress.
House leaders want to make the bill
about $25,00(1,000, but would name no
'definite figure until the president’s
wishes are consulted. The purpose of
consulting the president is to avoid
a presidential veto, but it is said to
be the Intention of the leaders to pass
the bill over his veto if he should de
cide against all appropriations for pub
lic buildings.
FREIGHT AGENTS TO
HOLD A SMOKER AND
HEAR TRAFFIC HEADS
An annual event will be the smoker
Friday evening of tin; Freight Traffic
club. Members of the club will assem
ble in the banquet hall of Durand's
restaurant for the occasion. Colonel L.
L. McClesky, assistant general freight
agent of the Southern-railway, is pres
ident of the club, and will be toast
master at the smoker.
E. H. Hinton, chairman of the South
eastern Freight association, wiil deliver
the annual address.
INJURIES RESULT IN DEATH.
FORSYTH, GA.. Dee. 25.—H. J. Pettis,
long a resident of Forsyth, is dead. Sev
eral days ago he was Injured by being
run over by a bicycle and since that

Xmas Dancing
Parties
Miss Maigaret Grant was the honor
guest at the first of the large holiday
dunces for tho younger set, which are a
feature in this week’s social calendar.
Mi. and Mrs. John W. Grant enter
tained 150 guests at a dancing party
last evening at the Piedmont Driving
club in honor of their young daughter,
who is at home from St. Timothys for
the Christmas vacation. The club was
elaborately decorated in poinsettias,
smilax and palms, with candlesticks
shaded in red. and mantels banked in
green and red Howers.
Mrs. Grant was lovely in a gown of
white satin with tunic of white span
gled tulle. Miss Grant wore a pretty
dancing frock of white chiffon gar
landed in small French rosebuds and
mdde over white charmeuse satin.
The affair was delightful, and char-*
terized by all the pretty details of the
holiday season.
Miss Hulu Jackson will be
the honor guest at a dinner dance also
at the Driving club, to be given by her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jack
son, for the younger contingent.
TEACHERS INSTITUTE AT
YATESVILLE NEXT WEEK
FORSYTH, GA., Dee. 25.—From De
cember 30 to January 3, M. L. Duggan,
state supervisor of education, will hold
a teachers’ meeting at Yatesville for the
counties of Pike, Upson, Crawford and
Monroe.
M. L. Brittain, state superintendent
of education, will take part in the exer
cises, and other well known educators
will be present.

MORGAN HELPS WIDOW
NEW YORK. Dee. 25.—A washer
woman of this city and her thirteen
children today celebrated the happiest
Christmas of their lives result of
a substantial cheek from J. Pierpont
Morgan. The check was sent as the
result of a recent visit which Mr. Mor
gan paid to his dentist.
The dentist was hurting Air. Morgan,
who was both blunt and frank in in
forming him of that fact.
‘‘One of the worst cases of destitu
tion I know of is that of my wife’s
washerwoman." remarked the dentist,
byway of diversion.
"How is that?" asked Mr. Morgan.
"Her husband died and left her thir
teen children. Only five of them are
large enough to work.”

WASHINGTON, Dec. 25. —Although
treasury' officials would make no offi
cial announcement regarding the re
port that Collector William Loeb. Jr.,
of the port of New York, is to resign
his office to become associated with the
Guggenheims, it was learned from an
authoritative source today that the re
port is true and that Loeb has informed
treasury officials of his plans.
None of the officials questioned could
say at what date Loeb’s resignation
would become effective, but it is under
stood that he will quit shortly after
January 1.
