The order contemplates an im
proved service between Cartersville
and Etowah, but as Etowah is over
the State line in Tennessee, the Geor
gia commission had no jurisdiction
beyond Cisco.

A bitterly fought telephone rate
battle that promise" to open up high
ly important questions of rate-making
methods in Georgia, to-day was an
nounced in prospect by <’. .VI. Han
dler, chairman of the State Railroad
Commission.
The contest, which will be between
the Southern L. ,1 Telephone and T« !- j
egraph Company and the city in Co-j
lumbus, Ga.. will be started before
the Railroad Commission as soon as
the telephone company completes an
audit of it" business tributary to the
Columbus central.

The Columbus City Council is fight
ing to compel tlie company to go back
to its old rates of $4 a month for
business and $2.50 a mon«.h for resi- J
(lence telephones, although an agree- 1
ment was made by a previous Council
that the company might charge $.T

dence telephones’ when it had 2,500
telephone station? in operation in the
city.
The final decision on the contest is
expected by Chairman Candler to J

New Council Opens Fight.
When the Southern Bell Company
purchased an old line in Columbus
(several years ago, the City Council
was willing t?> grant it the privilege
of raising its rates when it had made
! certain improvement s und increased
its subscribers to 2,500 A now Coun
cil. however, opposed the agreement.
As soon as the company inaugurated
; its advanced rates, which it delayed
nearly two years beyond the time the
agreement would have permitted, .the
new Council began its fight.
The; Commission has ruled that Llto

rates, with the obligation to repay
