Bertha Capps, the 15-vear-old daugh
ter «>f Marion Capps, a Methodist
minister condemned to die for the
death of his thr*e children in a fire
that destroyed the Capps home last
December 18. has confessed she had
testified falsely against her father at
his trial.
It wa.« tlie testimony of the girl
and that of her 13-year-old brother
that convicted ,Capps. It is said the
boy has also repudiated the story he
told at his father's trial The con
fession is to be used in the hope of
obtaining a new trial.

ALABAMA COAL AND IRON
COMPANY REORGANIZES
BALTIMORE. April 30.—The newly
elected directors of the Alabama
Company, the new Delaware corpo
ration formed to acquire the property
of the old Alabama Consolidated Coai
& Iron Company, will meet to-day.
It is expected steps will be taken
to elect officers.

LONDON. April 30. Renewed ac
tivity was Shown to-day by thu po
lio in their campaign against mili
tant .-uffragettes. For the second
thru the headquarters «»f the Wom
en's Social and Political Union in
Kings Way were raided. The raid was
a spectacular on#*, taking place at
noon when the streets were crowded.
Th«* police drove out the occupants
and allowed none to enter, while de
tective.- searched the organization’s
letter file* anil desks.
Five leading members of the union,
the Misses (’air. Lecox, Barrett and
Lake and Mrs. Saunders, were ar
rested >n a charge of malicious de-

the Bow Street police station.
The police captured evidence said
to relate to the threatened reprisals of
the militants if Mrs. Emmeline Pank-
huivt were returned to Jail.
Later the police also arrested An
nie Kenney and Mrs. “General’’ Flora
Drummond, two of* Mrs. Pankhurst's
chief lieutenants, on warrants charg
ing them with conspiracy and mali
cious destruction of property.

wrecked the offices occupied, by the
local branch of the Women's Social
and Political Union.

tary of the Navy Daniels has return
ed to Washington, after arranging
for. Immediately rebuilding his de
stroyed News and Observer plant. The

A movement has been begun by

tion work. Each takes $100 in stock
upon which a .subscription to the pi
per will be the annual dividend. Dan
iels later may buy the stock and will
hold tin* majority shares. He came
into ownership of thd paper on the
same plan. Buying back the stock
he gave each former subscriber th<
paper for ten years.

Gregory, of Atlanta, a postoffice In
spector. was here to-day in confer
ence with the District Attorney with
reference to the escape of “Portland
Ned.” a paroled convict, from Gov
ernor Bleaae’s office last week.
Gregory’ bad not heard of the es
cape until he reached Seneca to-day.
He left Anderson this afternoon to
trail the man. Gregory landed “Port
land Nod" in the Nolan 'McKinley
gang some years ago. He is now
wanted on a charge of robbing a post-
office.

This city paid its respect* to Secre
tary of State William Jennings Bryan
when he arrived here to-day from
Sacramento. A large crowd greeted
Mr. Bryan at the depot.

by President Moore and other officials

through Golden Gate Park and at Fort

WOMAN WHO INVENTED

CHICAGO, April St).—Mrs. Mary
Ann Ingram, said to have been the
creator of the ham and egg sandwich
and known to students at the Univer
sity of Chicago merely as “Mary
Ann,” died to-day.
She knew every athlete who was ih
training and always refused to sell
pies to those who were trying to
make the varsity teams.

stole money to buy heroin, a drug
store near one high school makes a
practice of selling to pupils.. Tin
