Chicks Die Because
Of Mismanagement
0 r Carelessness
Farmers Should Strive to Find Sue
cessful Way to Handle
Them.
Chicks are being hatched by hun
dreds all over the country at this
time, many of which will never live to
reach the age of value to their own
ers. owing to mismanagement or care
lessness
If farmers and poultry’ raisers would
atrive as hard to find the successful
way lo handle little chicks as they do
to master other things frequently of
much less Importance, we would see
thousands of good chickens go to our
markets in the place of tilling an un
timely grave.
By way of warning, i might say
that the throe most harmful things
the chicks have to contend with ar* 1
cold, wet and sloppy feed. In other
words, keep them dry. Peed cracked
grain and small seeds mixed, and feed
dry If you will have the nerve >o
stick to this kind of feed In their bill
of fare any length of time, you will
succeed. Keep coops, houses and runs
strictly chan and fresh and do not
crowd. This Is an old story to some

in methods.
To give you an idea of how valu

od. I will say that had I known twen

and practiced It during that time of
my breeding of pure bred chickens, 1
would have made $5 in place of every
$1 I did make. But someone asks
why f make such a statement? Sim
ply because I could not raise half the
(’hicks under the new method of
dry feed need a constant supply of
good grit In some form, either very
coarse, sharp sand or prepared grit.
Well supplied with these few essen
tials, there will be no trouble. Do
not be in a rush to feed them as soon
as they are out of the shell; better
wait two days if you want health.

Caponizing.
Judge Marshall; I raise White Leg
horns and White Wyandotte*, and
have a good many cockerels of both !
breeds coming on that 1 shall have L.
put on the market in some shape, as
1 want to k^iep the pullets for egg-
producers. I have been thinking of
caponizing a lot- of them. Do you
think it will pay me to go to the extra j
trouble in the increase in price and
weight? MRS. J. J. MORRIS.
Quitman. On.
ANSWER—I do not believe it will |
pay you to "o to the trouble to capon-
ize at all, and I know It will not pay
on the Leghorns. They are too srnai
a breed to make capons worth your
while to trouble with them. The larg
er breeds, such as the Brahmas and j
I’ochirrS and Hocks, make the finest ,
capons It would hardly pay you 4 o
