from side to side.
The breeds having till* comb are
the Brahmas, Buckeye*, all the Cor
nish and Sumatra. The most common
defect in these combs Is the twisting
from side to side near the middle. In
other words, It is a kink in all three
of the rows of points and makes
the comb decidedly out of line when
viewed from in froht.
Another kind of comb that is often
seen in one where the middle part
of the combs show all right and is
good shape in itself, but the sides
are very faintly outlined and would
almost be taken for a single comb
at first sight In mating ujr vuch
stock for breeding purposes one U
very likely to get some single comb*
and then the trouble has commenced.
The V comb Is a very peculiar one
and looks much like a pair of horns
standing up from the center of the
head. They show but very slightly
upon the heads of the hens. On the
well matured males it shows up all
right The comb in these breeds is,
however, not considered a valuable
asset, so that the smaller it is the
better tt is liked
Value by Judge*.
The comb is only valued at 4 points
out of the 100. The hreeds having
this form of comb are as follows: All
the Polish (which are eight varie
ties). the Houdnns. Orevecoeurs, and
La Fleche, French varieties.
Then we have the Malay and the
Silkie, with the strawberry comb
Mtbicb is not very much of a definite*
comb and is found only upon these!
two breeds of relatively small im-!
portanre. The comb is really of morel
Importance than Is generally consid- i
red as a distinguishing feature of j
th< breed or variety it represents,
'fake, for example, the l*ight Brah-j
mu the variety which stands at the
head of our !4st of thoroughbred J
fowls for recognized type in breed
ing and put a sort of mongrel type
of comb upon it and what would it
be worth? Or the Plymouth Hock
and put a wrinkled turn-over sort
of a comb upon it and a Hock man
would simply laugh at you and want
to know what it was mixed with.
It frequently occurs, however, that
some of the larger coinbod hens of a
variet> are the heaviest layers. That
is, they may have a comb almost
too heavy for the breed, although of
the right type, and be greatest layers
of the flock.
Question* and Answers.
Judge Marshall:—Is it a good plan
to breed pullets back to their sire?
Some tell me it is just the thing to
do, while others say it is detrimental
to health. I would be very glad to
have your 'opinion of It.
Monroe. Ga. S. J. R.
ANSWER: —While expert breeders
of long experience take the chances
of weakened vitality in the offspring
for the .«ak€* of gaining some valuable
points they have been striving hard
for. yet. as a rule, it is not good
policy to make a business of it. Un
less you are sure you are going to
be able to intensify a number of good
qualities in the next generation, you
had better not take the risk of mul
tiplying a lot of serious defects.
You see, it is close inbreeding and
is not a good policy for those who
are not working for the very highest
in type to undertake or run tTie risk
of for health’s sake. Of course, it is
better to breed thq.t way than to
i breed brother and sister together
