Serious Mistakes
Of the Beginner in
Poultry Business
Safe Road as Well as the One To Be
Avoided—Pure Stock
Necessary.
A great many serious mistakes are
being made by beginners in the poul
try buainea* from ignorance. True,
experience is a very good and safe
teacher, but often very expensive in
both time and money.
It is for this reason we desire to
point out the safe road as well as the
one to be avoided.
An idta prevalent with beginners in
starting with thoroughbred stock ;s
that all that is necessary is that stock
be pure, so-called. In other words,
they purchase stock of a neighbor who
says his stock is pure, but when an
expert breeder or judge looks at this
stoc k he finds that it Is anything but
what high-class standard bred stock
should be.
But you ask, If it is pure what can
be the matter with it? A great many
things can be th<- matter with it Tno
most romiuuu tnod# of breeding where
carelessm sg is in letting all
classes of tr. e breed run in tHe bleed
ing pen.
For example, take the Barred Rock
which is quite familiar, in a certain
way, to almost everyone. Upon the
premises of this careless breeder we
find hens of forty different shapes and
shades of color; from light to almost
solid black. These are running pro
miscuously with a half dozen roosters,
all different in color and type of
make-up. If you stop to think for a
moment, can t you imagine what such
a combination would produce, or as
the Dutchman said, "what it would
not produce?” We can not hope fo
anything in the shape of uniformity
of the young stock we raise when ill
sizes, shapes and colors were allowed
to run together and form the breeding
stock.
Culls Bound to Come.
Thht the best and selected stock
will breed some culls no experienced
breeder of any breed will deny. They
are bound to come. That the tendency
F. J.
MARSHALL
iy downward Instead of upward, if
no culling is done, will also readily
admitted by the experienced. Conse
quently. if we expect to Improve or
even maintain a high standard of ex-
i ellence, we must breed from only the
choicest specimens, putting those of
uniform color and breeding types into
the same pens. This plan, and th s
alone, will prove satisfactory.
r:ggs at $- and $8 seem unreason
able and to ' high to the average farm
er or villager who has made no study
of the conditions, and the tempta
tion to buy the cheapest eggs he can
get is generally more than he can
stand. If lie be at all progressive in
his make-up, and lias any idea of
eventually getting tiie best, •the
change will come soon, r tr inter when
this cheap stock will be disposed, of
and a fresh start made. But this Is
expensive in both lime and money
wasted. True, a man might iaV>
quite a low -grade of stock and > im
years of patient culling and breeuin
get to where it would make a pretty
good showing. But my, what a Ion,;
and tedious road to travel!
Now, friends, you who are starting
or getting ready to invest in pure bred
stock and have an eye to the beautiful
and the best, take m.v advice and open
vour purse wide enough to get some
thing good, rr you do not get just
what you thought you would, try it
again and keep on until you succeed
