The Light Brahma is one of the old
well-extabiished breeds of chickens
It has been bred in this country 'or
about 65 years at flr»t in a rather
crude state, as compared with what
it has attained .to at this time; then
it was termed rather gawky, rather
irregular and ill-shaped in its lines
of make-up. To-dg.v it is a breed of
sturdy and commanding appearance,
yet graceful and symmetrical in every
line of its make-up. At least, so it
appears to all w r ho admire a chicken
of some size. It is the heaviest chick
en in the standard category. Cocka or
old males weigh 12 pounds; hens and
mature females, 9 pounds; cockerels
10 pounds, and pullets. 8 pounds. This
makes a pretty heavy -quartet, with a
combined weight of 39 pounds. With
all this it Is not an Inactive breed
like the Cochins.
They are good winter layers, and l^y
fairly well all the year. Their eggs
are large, with a heavy brown/shell,
and command a better price in the
Boston market than any of the lighter
or white shell eggs. The Brahma is
well adapter! to cold climates and
does very well in warmer ones. It
has what is known as a pea comb,
composed of three rows of small
points running side by side and are
connected at the base where it joins
the head. It is a breed of good length
In sections composing. Neck Is of
good length and full feathered and
well arched; hack of good leng’U.
broad and rather flat at shoulders,
with a long concave sweep to tail;
tall is full and well expanded all
around, hut rather shqut, with short
sickles; breast and body are broad
and deep and of good length, and
standing upon stout, heavy thighs and
shanks of medium length.
As to color, It might be described in
■ few wonis As being white, wfth a
neck distinctively striped with clear
black stripes down the center of each
feather, ending Itj a point near the end
of each feathery- The fail is glossy
black, with a good supply of coverts
black edged with white. In the fe
male the two top feathers are edged in
white or gray. The wing's, when fold
ed, show no black, hut when opened,
the primaifles are hlac^k, with a faint
white edging, the secondary or upper
feathers should show black above the

little mixture of black is seen in th n
toe feathering. A dark or slaty under
color is not a defect, if it does not
show upon the surface. In the make
up of a good specimen stamina l»
shown in every line. A slim or deli
cate Brahma should not be tolerated.
Thfry are not a success as a rule. They
do not fly and. they are easily confined
by the ordinary wire fence.
Indigestion.
Judge F. J. Marshall: Have noticed
among my chickens and turkeys sev
eral that are droopy. Their crops are
soft and when I hold their heads down
a watery substance runs from their
mouth. Can you tell me what the
trouble is and a remedy for it ?
Plainsville, Ga. MISS M. M.
ANSWER—You do not say what
you are feeding, but I take It that
you are feeding too much sloppy or
wet cornmeal mash or something cf
that nature, which has caused indi
gestion among them and a fermenta
tion is going on in the crop, prevent
ing it from passing on to the gizzard
as quickly as it should. If this is
the case, we would advise you to
change the feed to a good mixed
cracked grain ration, fed dry and in
limited quantites. Do not try to crowd
them with feed. Let them get hungry.
Provide yourself with some pulverized
or granulated charcoal. It may bo
about the size of a half grain of
wheat. Give each one affected about n
half teaspoonful twice a day. whether
they have any feed or not, for a day
or two does not matter. Let them
have some good green food and be
sure they have good sharp grit. These
are very essential to health. We think
with the above treatment and cau
tious feeding in small quantities until
they become normal will bring them
around all right.
