LONGEST TUNNEL
’J' HE longest tunnel in the world is the Simplon,
J which is twelve and one-half miles lotijr. It took
over eijrht years to complete, at a eost of nearly
$20,000,000. The tunnel gives France and Switzer
land direct communication with Milan.
Many people are s till under the impression that
the St. (rothard tunnel is the longest, but. as a mat
ter of fact, the Simplon tunnel is one-fourth more in
length than the St. Gothard. and nearly twice the
length of the Mont Cenia.
