HOTTEST CITY
§
The hottest city on earth is said to be Mecca, the cap
ital of the Turkish Province of Ilejaz, in Arabia.
A temperature of 125 degrees Fahrenheit is nothing
unusual in Mecca.
Being the birthplace of Mohammed and containing
the Kaaba, the city of Mecca is also the central and
most holy place of all Islam.
xrtVr\Yth>
By JUDGE J. F. MARSHALL.
It Is no secret with a great many
poultrymen and farmers that a well-
fed, fat hen is a good egg producer, in
spite of the hue and cry by a certain
class warning us not to get our hens
fat.
I believe these people are honest in
their opinions. I think they have been
governed almost wholly by the fact
that at times they have killed an old
hen that had passed her usefulness
and quit producing eggs, and the hen
in question was filled with fat and no
signs of eggs.
Putting two and two together, they
decided that the reason she was not
producing eggs was on account of her
fat, while the real truth in the mat
ter is she was too old to pro
duce eggs. And her fatness is ex
plained by lack of exercise.
Observation covering a period of
nearly 40 years, during which I have
made a study of the hen, her laying
times, her condition during that time,
and in fact everything pertaining to
egg production, has brought me to the
conclusion that it is the fat but ener
getic hen that gives us the eggs.
Corn Not a Bad Feed.
I have seen hundreds of hens
dressed for the table, and it has been
almost a universal rule that the hen
that was full of eggs in various stages
of formation was also full of layers
of fat. I have observed hundreds of
farmers who would feed their hens
corn almost exclusively tfie year
round and market eggs by the bushel
all the time. They were stock farm
ers who had more corn to spare than
any other kind of grain, and they
made use of it.
How often you have heard corn con
demned? Some go so far as to assert
that it should not be fed to hens at
all in any considerable quantity.
Did you ever stop to think that the
yolk of the egg is about 60 per cent
fat. while the white and shell contain
no fat? The yolk being the first part
of the egg to form must necessarily
have, as the Irishman said, the where
withal to form it from. The fat must
be there ready for the work.
Surplus Energy Gives Eggs.
We must remember that the egg is
manufactured from the surplus en
ergy the hen has over and above that
necessary to maintain her body in a
good, healthy condition. As soon as
that point is reached she begins to
lay on the reserve, which is fat out
of which the egg is made.
There may be an occasional hen
that will take on fat abnormally and
get filled up so as to retard egg pro
duction, but we must take the chances
on that if we are working for heavy
egg production. Such hens usually
are not worth much for eggs in any
event.
There Is a class of hens that tend
to take on fat outside of the digestive
tract on the lower part of the abdo
men. They get so fat that It Is diffi
cult for them to walk. As a rule such
hens had just as well be disposed of
as soon as found in that condition, for
the fat is in such a position that it
can not be utilized in egg formation
These are drone hens which give
many persons the idea that fat hens
are useless. They are the exceptions
that prove the rule.
Professor James Rice, of Cornell
poultry department, says it has been
his experience that hens will consume
considerably’ more food a time before
they begin to lay, another Indication
that they are preparing the system
for the great strain to be put upon it.
Experiment Suggested.
Then did you ever notice how rav
enously a hen taking care of chickens
will eat in her endeavor to recoup
herself, and how, as soon as she has
fattened up. she will begin to lay?
For the sake of experimenting along
that line Just feed the hen with chick
ens just enough to keep her in mod
erate condition, but not nearly what
she would like to have, and see how
