*T>wr11fid sardines'* Is one of the
newMt and Ilk* wis* 1 one of the most
attractive food products, and from this
hangs a tale—a fish story, If you must
have it so.
The American sardine industry Is in
a terrible state. This Is assorted by
no less an authority than the United
States Government, which is spend
ing considerable money In an effort to
put the business on its feet again.
Foreign competition started the
trouble. American manufacturers,
more properly called packers, began
price slashing The big fellows made
the first reductions. In self-defens<
the smaller fry had to meet thcs«-
prices. The big chaps were perilously
near the cost line, even with their
modern appliances, labor-saving de
vices and strict economies. The "taril-
ers*’ got below the price where they
oould puck sardines honestly and at a
proflL
Bo they began packing them the
other way, and ns a result the Ameri
can sardine haB n bad name.
The Government has advanced
many solutions, but 8. Emery, of
Boston, a manufacturer, has shown
the greatest Ingenuity.
“If there is no money in ordinary
sardines, why not a new product, dif
ferent from my competitors' goods,
both domestic and foreign?” he asked.
The deviled sardine was the answer.
The best part of the whole fish Is
ground and prepared with olive oil
and salad dressing and pocked In
enamel-lined cans. The result is a
product which Is the exact parallel of
deviled ham, but with a delicious sar
dine flavor.
The goods Just have invaded the
South. H. H. Whitcomb A Burke
t'ompany, No. 149 Madison avenue.
Atlanta’s foremost grocery brokers,
have the account, and salesmen now
are pushing the goods among the re
tailers. According to all accounts,
they are meeting with a cordial re
ception.
Canned meats are advancing stead-
ily in price. Roast beef, lunch and
ox tongues, corned beef and dried
beef all have been marked up within
the past few days, according to W
M. Burke, of the firm mentioned. The
lard market is steady, with a rising
tendency.
Carpet Wools Hard
To Purchase Now
Small Manufacturers Have Much
Trouble In Getting Material
for Urgent Needs.
NEW YORK, Aug 9.—With no carpet
woo] available in this market for press
ing needs, small carpet and rug nmnu- f
facturer.s are having considerable trou- j
hie in turning out the goods they have
on order. Supplies lipid in bond by large
manufacturers are all wanted, and even
offers slightly above open market quota
tions have failed to induce the owners of '
these wools to part with any of their
holdings.
Large carnet wool dealers state that
the uncertainty as to when the free
wool aehedules will go Into effect and ,
the proposal recently made that fie**
wool should take effect T>ecember 1 is
seriously restricting their business
With a knowledge of Just when free
wool will take effect, dealers state that
they could go ahead and place their for
ward contracts on new season’s clips
with continence.
Much of the wool now held in bond
was placed there under the belief that
the free wool schedules would go into
effect October 1. Efforts are now being
made to have carpet wools placed on the
free wool list Immediately the bill is
passed.
A request along this line will he pre
sented at Washington, it is reported be
fore the final vote Is taken on the wool I
schedule. Owners <>f wool now in bond
have realized that It Is cheaper to with
draw these wools and pay current rates
than to place orders abroad for new
clip wools. The prices paid for the wool
now here were considerably lower than
they are to-day. as the lots of new clip
wools coming on the market are reported
as being held at very stiff prices.
Wooden Beds Regain
Former Popularity
Styles Favor Classical Models, Such
as Adam, Sheraton and Other
English Period Pieces.
Fall trading In the furniture market
has been good. If the sales now being
held by large retailers are satisfactory,
heavy ordering will follow Immediately,
as in most instances stocks are thought
to be fairly low The buying tendency
in living room sets is toward cane and
loose-cushion varieties In tapestry-cov
ered goods.
There Is a notable demand for wooden
beds, which arc said to be replacing the
metal variety, in cases where the match
ing of suites Is required The style
trend Is toward the classical, Adam.
Sheraton and other English period furni
ture leading the selling movement.
A collapsible crib and bed will be fea
tured. which, when folded, bedding and
a'l. can be rolled out of the wav under
any ordinary bed It Is said to be very
durable and convenient. The drop in
prices of better grade leather will prob
ably cause a slight price decrease in
leather-covered goods With this excep
tion, prices are liritily held.

| Raw Silk High and the Fabric
Promises To Be Even More
Fashionable Next Year.
NEW YORK, Auif. 9 —The question
of prices on the new silk lines seem
to be worrying some members of the
trade. Raw material i/s held at high
levels, .and promise to be even higher
on the raw silk which will be needed
for the coming season. In addition
to this, silks afe fashionable, and
promise to be still more so next
spring and summer. In a good many
case*? selling agents state that they
will have to depend largely on the
strength of the demand to hold prices
;,t levels which will give manufac
turers a reasonable margin on which
to operate.
Buyers are already talking of
prices being too high on silk fabrics,
and with the wide assortment of
novelty cottons, and cotton and silk
manufacturers on the market for
next spring, broad silk manufoturers
realize that they will have to meet
keener competition. Not only Is this
the case, but domestic manufacturers
are also facing tariff reductions, and
are not sure at the present time just
how Important a part foreign silks
are going to play in the spring and
summer trade. Imports of silks at
this port for the month of July
amounted to $2,122,376 as compared
with $1,894,004 for the same month
last year, an Increase of over $200,000.
The scramble for deliveries on back
j fall orders is now on in earnest. The
market is full of retailors from many
sections of the country', and a good
j many arc more interested in geiting
goods which were placed on order
l some time ago, than they are in plac
ing new business.
Visitors Attracted
To Novelty Display
At Kimball House
Busts, Hand-Painted China, Cut
Glass, Dolls and Toys Shown
in Ball Room.
Visitors to the ballroom on the third
floor of the Khnball House of late have I
been treated to one of the most nove’
sights in the history of local commer
cial displays This consists of the ninth
annual exhibit of Berry Bros. & Kresch.
of Baltimore, the line including all
kinds of china, cut glass, novelties,
dolls and toys. The display opened Au
gust 4 and will close August 30.
The exhibit is in charge, of W. .J
Ohenoweth, who is well known not only
among local jobbers, but with the retail
trade as well. This is Mr Ghenoweth’s
ninth appearance in Atlanta, and this
year he has a more complete line than
ever before.
A trip through the Kimball’s ball
room la indeed worth while. It is quite
a liberal education in the arts and
crafts. There are handsome busts done
after the true Italian style, exquisite
hand-painted china and china sets
which are standard in Paris, London.
Berlin and Tokio, and the daintiest elec
tric lamps imaginable.
"We have some of the best known
artists in the country painting china-
ware for us," explained Mr. Ghenoweth.
"■Vou ran see by the tine finishing
touches and the pleasing harmony of
the figures, as a whole, that only the
best workmanship is employed. The
same, for that matter, is true of the
other classes of articles. Some idea of
the extensiveness of our line can be
gained from the statement that it costs
to open up and get started for busi I
ness.

CUBISTS IN MILLINERY FIELD.
Cubist roses are tno newest thing
In the mlllinory world. These are
silk flowers with square petals and
foliage. Part ol the rose is in one
color ami the rest of another shade.
The color schemes are varied, and
various shadings are grouped, some
times harmoniously and sometimes In
n way to create a clash of colors.
The cubist wing has also made its
appearance, and some observers look
for a season of “square” millinery
ornamentation.
