The burglar stole a gold watch

dresser drawer in one of the bed
rooms. He entered the house by
opening a rear window with a Jimmy
Mrs. Hawkins had been to the mat
inee and returned to her home short
ly before 5 o'clock. As she closed
the front door behind her. a negro
came into the hall from a bedroom.
Before Mrs. Hawkins could scream
the negro drew a blackjack from his
pocket and leaped in front of her.
“If you move I'll knock your brains
out. the burglar sa d, brandishing his
club.
Mrs Hawkins shrank back and the
negro escaped.

troops before the Japanese Consulate
as a sign of abjection.
These demands are In the hands of
the Cabinet.
There Is a force of 2 000 Japanese
marines at Nanking, and the Japa
nese Consulate there ic protected by
a battery of quick-firing runs. whiU
there are five Japanese warships in

Physician Says His Heart Is Free
From Bitterness and Expresses
Trust in Providence.
"T thank God and your honorable
board for recommendation for full
pardon. I knew God would not per
mit the Innocent to suffer.”
This was the text of a telegram re
ceived by the Prison ('omrirhsion Fri
day morning from Dr. W. J. Mc-
Nnughton, the Emanuel County phy
sician who is under oentence of death
for the killing of Fred Flanders.
Chairman Davison read the tele
gram without comment and declared
that the ( ommission would not reply
to Dr McNaughton. The recommen
dation for a full pardon was forward
ed late Thursday afternoon to Gov
ernor Slaton, who probably will con
sider the case fhr several weeks be
fore reaching a decision. The reprieve
granted by the Governor will expire
on October 5.

SAVANNAH. Sept. 12.—In a state
ment on the recommendation by the
prtoon board for his full pardon. Dr.
W J. McNaughton. central figure In
one of Georgia’s greatest murder
mysteries, said to-day:
“I have no plan for the future ex
cept to go back and try and retrieve
what has been lost—my practice,
many of my frlendB and virtually all
the money 1 ever had.
“It’s quite a price to pay for cir
cumstantial evidence, but I have no
bitterness In my heart toward any
one or anything In the world, but the
most kindly feeling. I am going right I
back where I lived before and I sin- j
cerely trust the people will repose In '
me the same confidence they did
when 1 lived and worked among
them.**

to make myself as comfortable
possible and to got all the enjoyment
out of my unenviable position I
