RITCHIE'S SECOND STORY FOR THE GEORGIAN
Much interest is being shown in in
coming game between the Fifth Reg!
ment and the Governor’s Horse Guard
teams which will be played on the Ar-
mory courts next Friday night. The
championship of the Military League
hinges on the result. Both teams load
the circuit, neither team having suf
fered a defeat this season.
Following is the line-up of the Fifth
Regiment team: McGee and Griff it,
forwards; Hugh Mauck, center; Captain
Frankie Pearson and Jarvis, guards.
The Governor's Horse Guard's line-up:
Dusty Rhodes and Hd Floyd, forwards;
“Jake” Guvan. center; Captain A. Jones-
and Johnnie Graves, guards.
H ARRY RAKISH, the clever lit

stnrt In the ring In Han FratiClfcco,
and it was against my will At that.
1 used to pal around with Baker and
Frankie Kdwards ami I began to take
a »ort of fancy to boxing because I
heard them talk so much about it.
Now and then 1 would put on the
gloves with Raker, nml of course he
lined to alarn me around, for l knew'
practically nothing about how to han
dle the mitts.
Baker kept after me all the time
and tried to tell me that there was a
good chance for me to break into the
fidir-round game 1 thought that ho

did no' pay much attention to what
he said
Well. I remember one night In No

was nut at the fights with me, grab
bed me by the arm and began tj> talk
business to me in a hurry.
“Here's your chance, Cleary," hq
said. "They want a kid to OH In and
it’s up to you. If you win you may
make a big hit for yourself, and if
you lose, well, what's the difference?
You can take a chance anyhow."
But 1 was not strong for that. 1
told Baker that 1 would have stage
fright, and if I dirt lose all the gang
would kit! hie and I would not hear
the last of it for goodness only knows
how Ion?

Nobody will know you , Come on
now and take a chance I know that
you can bent this kid. for 1 have been
boxing with you " •
Anyhow, to make a long story short,
1 finally fell for Raker's ad view. He
rushed me into the dressing room, dug
up n set *tj trunks and a pair of shoes

looking, he took me aside and gave

Five in Opening Game of
Season Saturday Night.
Only a few of the most intimate friends of the lightweight cham
pion know how he got the nickname of Willie Ritchie. It was not
until he became famous did the world at large even suspect that the
great little champion was fighting under an assumed name. To-day
he tells how the "Willie Ritchie” was tacked on to him In a San
Francisco ring just six years ago, when he broke in and won his first
fight by a knockout in the second round. The title holder tells of
the incidents which led up to his start and of his fear the first time he
appeared before a big crowd.
