Racing Homers
Broad Leaved Evergreens
(This is the first of a series of arti
cles prepared by Otto Katzensteln,
the well-known Atlanta landscape de
signer.)
“Home of the Dixie Flyers”
Among the several varieties of
pigeons, nope are more popular than
the Racing Homers. The birds are
the same sizo as the squab homers
and will produce squabs as rapidly
and their squabs find ready sale.
One of the pleasures in raising this
variety is in training the youngsters
to come home—and come back quick
—and getting them to enter the trap
promptly on their arrival. This latter
Is very important, as a bird may get
back an hour or so ahead of the oth
ers entered in a flight, but the one
that enters the trap first is the one
that wins. Teach them, while young,
to enter the tra- promptly on arrival
at loft. One of the most popular
plans is to put feed inside the trap,
and as the hird goes in to get the feed
the door falls.
There is really no trouble learning
them to copie home—this instinct be
ing bred in them for so many years.
When the young ones are about three
months old is the time to begin with
them. Catch a dozen in the afternoon
before they are fed and put in a coop.
The next morning before feeding
them take them in the‘yard and toss
them in the air and make them fly
around a while. Have the feed -’aced
inside the trap and when you let them
light on the house or fly, and they see
the feed, they will go right in. Never
let them out for a fly unless they are
good and hungry. Repeat this for
several mornings, and then take them
a mile or ?o from home and throw up
in the air, and unless you have a
“Nancy Hanks” they will be in the
loft when you get back.
By degrees add to the distance you
take them until you have had them
out a dozen or so times, then you can
begin sending them good distances.
Start with ten miles, then 25. and so
on, adding from 10 to 30 miles each
time, until you have them to 100
miles. It is not a good idea to
“crowd” the youngsters under six
months of age, but when they get
nine months old you can send them
up to 500 miles, and they will get
bacj< the same day.
Some of the finest and fastest rac
ing birds in the world are now tn
the Atlanta Racing Lofts on Lee
street. This Loft contains birds that
were raised by his majesty King
George of England, who is one of the
greatest racing men, and whose birds
are eagerly sought after, and bring
fancy prices where any are of
fered for sale. George Stone, also of
England, and whose birds need no in
troduction to racing men. Is also rep
resented in this loft, and the principal
American breeders and racers, such
as Howlett, Kirton, Wagner-—the men
whose birds win the trophies—have
added their quota to the foundation
stock of this loft.
The blue-checkered cock. “Dixie
Boy,” won a thousand-mile race in
the East with over *200 birds com
peting. and the blue hen, "Dixie
Girl,” won the big futurity in a hail
and snow storm. Numerous other
birds in this loft have flown their
1,000 miles and their young are fol
lowing in their footsteps. Young
“Smooky**—the first bird hatched ;n
January, 1916. has made a dozen or
more flights, and can make his "mile
a minute” on distance of 100 miles.
Every bird in this loft Is banded
w T ith a Racing Association seamless
band, and has a recorded pedigree
same as blooded cattle and horses.
This seamless band is a guarantee
that you get the bird you buy. The
band can not be taken off unless you
cut it or cut the bird’s foot off. and
In either event you would know it.
In buying racing stock never buy a
bird unless he has a seamless band
of one of the big racing associations,
and you will then get a good bird.
The racing men as a whole are a
good-natured bunch of fellows, who
breed these birds for the love of the
sport, and in the big Eastern flights
money is no object when it comes to
purchasing a 1,000-mlle or a futurity
winner.
One of the advantages in breeding
the Racing Homer is that you have
three ways to make money from
them. The first is for racing, second
for breeders of both racers and
squabs, and last they have no suoe-
rior in the homer family fpr squabs.
A few pair of these birds will prove
a lucrative investment, as they will
give you pleasure in their Hying and
profit with their squabs'.

It is quite remarkable to what an
extent we can Improve the appear
ance of our grounds by the use of
broad-leaved evergreen tre^s and
shrubs. Included in this class are
magnolia, iaurels, euonvmus, oaks and
many others. Evergreens should be
planted with particular care, as they
are very impatient with any kind of
indifferent treatment. The best time
for transplanting evergreens in our
section is in early fall. The plants
should be taken up with a ball of
earth, and the roots should not be al
lowed to become dry under any cir
cumstances. The holes should be of
ample size. Poor soil should be re
placed with good loam. The plants
should be set out to about the same
depth they had been growing be
fore. To atop the waste of plant food,
the leave? of broad-leaved evergreens
such as hollies and magnolias, should
oe cutoff, not pulled. By this means
the plant is enabled to devote its
strength to the formation of a new
root system which in turn will be
able to feed the new foliage The
plang should be thoroughly watered
upon setting it out, and the loose soil
at the surface should be covered with
wome kind of a mulch, such a» well-
rotted manure, pine needles, leaves,
etc., to hold the moisture around the
roots. Evergreens treated In the here
described manner should succeed,
even if plants of considerable size are
moved.
> Magnolia grandifiora. While a
beautiful tree to look at throughout
the year, this magnolia is such a
grass feeder, and at the same
what the nurseryman calls a "dirty”
tree, that its planting on small lawns
is not advisable. It is a desirable
tree where a lawn underneath it is
not essential.
The like oak is one of oui^ very
finest broad-leaved evergreens It
does best in sections not too distant
from the ocean, but carecul attention
will make them succeed verv nicely
in inland locations They require rich
soil.
The holly has the reputation as a
tree which will stand transplanting
very badly. If, however, the plants
are defoliated even large specimens
can be moved with safety.
The Yawpon holly is one, if not the
most, beautiful native evergreens.
The leave? are narrow, glossy green,
and the plant? are actually - covered
with brilliant red berries throughout
the winter. While native to Georgia,
it is very rarely found as yet under
cultivation, but deserves to be the
most popular evergreen shrub.
The Rhododendrons and Kalmias
grow in profusion in the mountains of
Georgia. They require at least half-
shady locations. The soil in w'hich
they are planted should be worked
very deeply, and contain a great deal
of leaf mould, but great care should
be taken that it is free of lime. The
magnificence of the flowers of these
plants and the stateliness of their
foliage easily repays for apy care
taken with them.
The English Laurel also is very
showv with its large, glossy foliage,
and one of itF attractions is the very
regular growth, and the eaee with
which it stand? trimming.
The Abelia is a shrub from China,
which has attained to great and well-
deserved popularity during the last
few years. It is very modest in Its
demands as to location, and it thrives
in any good garden soil. Its small,
glossy foliage turns to a bronze shade
in winter and its creamy white flow
ers cover the shrub in abundance
throughout the growing season, and
send forth a very delicate fragrance.
The Banana shrub belongs to the
magnolias, and owes Its name to the
fragrance of its blossoms, which
closely resembles that of ripe ba
nanas. It fq^ms a small-sized tree
and deserves general attention.
The Andromedas, Leucothoes, Fie
ri? are all shrubs of the highest merit
and are at thelT hew in half-shady
locations. They have creamy white
flowers of great beauty, and glossy
green foliage.
The Euonymus family has many
desirable representatives, and its
most popular one Is the Japanese
Euonymus, well known everywhere
by its glossy green foliage. Unfor
tunately K is very frequently affected
by the pernicious Euonymus scale,
which destroys the plants and against
which no effective remedy has been
found as yet.
The Evergreen Azaleas, for w’hich
we are principally indebted to Japan
and China, do best in half-shady lo
cations and in well-enriched leaf
mould. The beauty of their flowers,
which range the entire scale from
snow white to deep scarlet, is well
known to all. For best effect azaleas
Bhould be massed, as should Rhodo
dendrons and Kalmias.
Where evergreen backgrounds are
desired at a relatively low cost, the
use of different species of Japanese
Privets is recommended. They nre
rapid growers, and thriv> in any fair
soil.
For old-fashioned gardens nothing
can take the place of boxwoods. Given
a rich soil and sunny weather they
will do well, but one must never for
get that they are slow growers at best.
The nurserymen in Holland have a
way to force the growth of boxwood
by planting.them in exceedingly rich
soil, and by frequent applications of
liquid fertilizers Such specimens are
the picture of health w r hen they leave
the nursery, but as it is quite impos
sible for the amateur to continue the
strenuous feeding, such plants are
generall> quite short lived.
One small evergreen tVee, which oc
curs wild In the Southern States. Is
the Carolina cherry, or wild olive. It
really is one of the best broad-leaved
plants for us. The glossy deep green
foliage makes it a splendid back
ground, and its adaptability to any
shape make? it a very desirable lawn
tree, or even hedge. It is not an easy
tree to transplant, and it should be
pruned back severely when moved.
For the lover of intense fragrance
the Cape Jasmine or Gardenia has no
superior. It thrives in any rich soil.
Oleander makes a very tyg bush and
when in full bloom is a sight worth
going a long distance for.* Unfortu
nately it does not stand freezing
weather and requires protection dur
ing winter, which detracts greatly
from its usefulness in our section.
For a quite tropical effect the ever
green Photinias should be planted.
They have large, glossy leaves, stand
cold weather, and do best in half-
shady locations. They are entirely
hardy.
There are a great many other
brood-leaved plants, such a? the tea
plant, the tea olive, AniRe shrub, or
ange, Camellia and others which will
give distinction to any planting and
w'hich therefore deserve considera
tion.
