Pauline Grayson Makes Appeal
for Measures to Lim\t Fam
ilies of Poor.
WOULD KEEP DOWN CRIME
Blames Excessive Pauper Procre
ation for Drunkards, Thieves
and Murderers.
Pauline Gray ton. nuthorrss, artist
an/I inrentm-, has made a careful
study of ter problems and the welfare
of children. In the following article
she touches a new note on "the rerk
lees. purposeless propagation of the
human kind
By PAULINE GRAYSON.
There uan be no objection urged
against marriage In poverty, provid
ing tfce parties thereto are dominated
by a proper regard for the importance
of keeping the numbers of the house
hold within the limit** for which their
means will provide; but. alas! re
gardless of these weighty considera
tions, the multiplication of numbers
begins and proceeds until, in the ef
fort to provide for the fruits of these
marriages, all concerned become
wretched
This field of excessive pauper pro
creation is the ground, so to apeak,
from which is recruited the great
army of drunkards, thieves, murder
ers and other characters representing
every form of vice, brutality and
degradation.
Urges State Laws.
Is it not a truism that if each fam
ily were limited to such numbers as
the properly constituted producer of
the family could prowide for there
would exist only a vestige of that
penury that now darkens the earth
and burdens society?
Is It not evident that this multipli
cation in households beyond the limit
of provision *s not only the creatoi^of
that monstrous condition that we rail
abject poverty, but perpetuates crim
inality"
The State undertakes in almost ev
ery part of the civilized world to dic
tate in reference to children as to the
term of schooling, the age at which
they mav he employed in factories or
exploited in public performances
Why not with equal reason «*»ek to
$tay the tide of degenerate, depend
ent childhood ever setting in on so
ciety?
Is Doubly Criminal.
There are laws for the prevention
of cruelty to children and others for
the protection of the brute creation.
There, are laws and lnws>—a prodi
gality of statutory enactments upop
- almost every conceivable subject, and
very few questions are seriously
raised in opposition thereto on the
ground of invasion of individual
rights
If ft is criminal to deprive an in
dividual of his belongings, whether it
he by calumny, theft or assassina
tion. it is doubly criminal to produce
beings in such excessive numbers
that by sheer force of circumstances
they must inevitably become violators
of every' provision of the criminal
code

HAN BERNARDINO, CAL., June 12
That his wife’s affections, which he al
leges were stolen by Joseph H. Riley,

Bum Comes First

HAN FRANCISCO, June 12. When
the alternative of losing his wife or cut
ting the acquaintance of John Barley

Judge Graham’s court, Gunn said he
couldn’t think of deserting his old
friend, and declined to sign the pledge

Kansan Is Second, But Tender-
Hearted Women Divide the
First Prize.
FARMINGTON, N, MEX., June 12
Men of Missouri make the most sat
isfactory husbands, but Kansans fol
low a close second. This was proven
in a demonstration contest held here
by women. In it four men were put
through a number of trying feats, in
cluding that of demonstrating how a
man should act while staying at home
fand keeping the children while his
wife was away at the voting place.
L. W. Gales, a firmer Missourian, an
swered this question and a majority
of the others to the best satisfaction
of the judges. T. W. Schutz, who
hails from Kansas, was second best,
but the tenderhearted women voted
the thing a draw at the end of the
proceedings, and divided the first
prize be*ween these two men.
The con teats included threading a
needle, time consumed and graceful
ness of the operation; the placing of

Owner and Manager,
Pablo Beach, Fla.
Pablo Beach is the most pleasant and ac-
cessable and most logical place for Georgia,
Alabama and Tennessee people to visit during
the hot summer months. The water is cool,
but not cold. The most delicate constitution
can get m'uch benefit from its superb surf bath
ing. Many think because in Florida it is hot,
which is a mistaken idea. Those who have been
here will testify that this seashore resort is as
cool and comfortable as those farther north,
while the water temperature, the safe beach
and tlje deep-well artesian water is the best in
the world.
Pablo Beach is situated 17 miles from Jack
sonville on the Atlantic Ocean.
