Washington Feels Deeply Remov
al of the Missourian’s Vital
Personality After 25 Years of
Service, Says Colonel Graves.
By JOHN TEMPLE GRAVES.
Editorial Representative of The Sun
day American in Washington.
& WASHINGTON, Agpril 20.—~The
Meath of Senator William J. Stone has
wast a distinct, even If momentary,
Shadow upon the Senate and upon the
Capital.
““The Missouri Senator was mueh
more than a perfunctory figure. He
was soch a live, vital fighting per
sonality in the upper ranks of the
American Senate that he can not fail
1o be missed among the men who
make history m the Senate and
among the vital figures around whom
revolves a large public Interest among
the people,
He has been for 45 years in publie
life, and for 25 years a foremost and
focal figure In the militant democracy
of the West. He was the stormy pe
trel of Missouri politics, and has
scarcely ever known a. tranquil mo
ment during his political career.
Strange that in the last year of his
life the curernt of his linclinations
should have revolted go powerfully
against war and set so strongly to
peace, even within the gquestionable
limits of pacifism. |
His life of storm and stress, of bel
ligerency and baitle has closed upon
the great battleficld of hig career. He |
died Nterally “with his boots on,” and
it 8 to be hoped that he has found in ‘
the Great Beyond wirich he now ex
plores that perpetual peace in whose
belief he put in rawn his leadership
in the greatest firum in the world.
Senator Stone s succeeded in the
chairmanship of the foreign relations
committee by Gllbert H, Hitcheoek,
Senator from Nebraska, and the
change marks a revolution in the spir
it and in the conduct of that most {m
portant and vital committéie of the
Senate during thig eventful era,
Senator Stone was conservative,
cautions, secretive, and, to a degree,
timid n his handling of the commit
tee which deals with peace or war In
the most important era of the world.
Senator Hiltcheock s cool, tran
quil, dbut absolutely open and abso
lutely daring in his comception of
American diplomacy., There is not a
man in the American Senate who has
grown more upon its respect during
the war period than the Senator from
Nebraska.
His convictions are oarefully
raached, and are clearcut in oonclu
sion, and polftely but absolutely fear
less imn their expression. He is neither
moved by prejudice nor restrained by
fear. Hle would not flatter Neptune
for his trident, nor Jupiter for his
power to thunder. He stood side by
side with Chamberiain of Oregon in
that first fateful challenge of the War
Department to competenacy.
Senator FMitchcock has been in
point of fact the chairman of the for
eign affatrs committee for the last
year, since Senator Stone took sharp
fssue with President Wilson against
the arming of American ships, and
Reainst the d@eclaration of war agatnst
Germeny.
Senator Hitchcock was himself a
conservative in the matter of war and
withheld his concurrence as long as
loyalty permitted, but when the Pres
ident and the country went to war,
Senator Hitchcock went with them,
burning his bridges behind him, and
without reserve.
But this has npot held Senator
Hitchcock subservient to legislative
sathority or tongus-tied in any mat
ter that demanded a challenge of in
competency on the part of the Gov
arnment. He has tnhesitatingly risked
presidential favor and challenged his
Democratie allgnment whenever in
s judgment the Interests of the
country in this war were not ade
quately carvied or not vigorously
pressed.
