Demetrius’ Playmate Honored
With Latest Feminine Makeup;
Molds Milady Statuesque.
By WINIFRED VAN DUZER, |
Staff Correspondent Universal Sorviu!
NEW YORK, March 4.—The flrst‘
of seasonal frivols in feminine wear- |
ing apparel heeded the lure of spring |
today and went a-strolling upon Fifth |
avenue. But inasmuch as the knife|
edge of a breeze pierced the sunshine
with lingering hint of winter, fur
coats were mixed up with straw hats |
ad exotic modes in gilk lace hose. |
The fact is that one saw more fur!
coats than upon any day of the colrl,f
geason now slipping into memory,’
and suspicioned that they were worn|
for the purpose of accentudting cer- |
tain features of new styles. ]
Those features are the oxlrr-mo;
shortriess of skirts, sheerness ‘ol
stockings, incidenial character m’l
headgear, and a startling new mnke-l
up which fashionable ones are afrm-!-i
ing.
The make-up, confided the proprie- |
tor of a famous beauty parlor, ‘S‘
known as the “Aphrodite,” so christ-|
ened for a current scenic production. |
It is obtained by powdering the facel
white with a dab of secarlet in the
exact center of the lips. It is not |
to be confused with the so-called|
“yampire” make-up of a season or|
two ago. For while that was anem!c,'
this is statuesque and usually is worn
with a pear] necklace, consistent with
the story of the play.
SKIRTS ASCEND CONSPICIOUSLY.
The somewhat high ;’titudv skirt
hem, which reports says has kept
Paris staring all winter, is taken as
a matter of course by New York.
However, one (-nuy! not but notice
that some of the skirts seen today
barely covered knees, and they failed
to do that when the wind blew. Many
were fashioned upon rubber bandas
‘which held them in harem-style at
hems and elevated those same
’hems alarmingly when wearers at
itemmed to negotiate stairways. And!
oh, when they climbed the “buses.” ‘
t A somewhat fantastic touch is the
liking for wide bands of monkey fur
round skirt bottoms. The fur hangs
down over silk hosiery, so sheer as
to challenge speculation as to its ac
tual existence, and produces strange
contrast.. 1t is like mixing the neo
lithic age with running hot water.
The round toed, short vamped ox
fords, also product of Paris, were al
most as numerous as feet. They ap
pear mostly in suede and satin. A
queer shade of brown, that of choc
olate grown stale, is a favorite color,
Straps across the ankle are tied with
rather large bows on top.
ABOUT THE HATS,
As for hats—let women of young
and uncreased skin rejoice and all
others bemoan such fate—they are
shiny and stiff and very, very ugly.
They are made mostly of patent
leather, some in brown and blue but
largely in black, than which there is
no thing more unkind to the face even
slightly passe. Almost of necessity
every hat is small, which gives one
the impression that all are incidental.
One of the most conservative was |
a sailor of irregular lines. The rim,
edged with a band an inch wide of
patent leather, was high on one side.
The other side rejoiced in a patent
leather bow the*size of a number ten
shoe and the whole creation was just
saved from being grotesque by em
broiderings of wool flowers in vari
ous colors. Even sgo the fresh, young
face of the girl who wore the hat
looked weighted and unhappy.
Another hat, built on Chinese lines|
with round crown and rim rolling up |
wasof brown and tan striped patent
leather. It looked for all the world
like an oil cloth you'll remember as
covering the Kkitchen table in time
gone by. A brown gros grain ribbon
circled the crown and hung in stream
ers on the side. i
The only hat one saw not of shiny
character was a coral colored chip
straw. The trimming was a nlom-n‘
'Or more strings of coral beads,
bunched at the side of the crown and
clattering together over the rim quite
to the wearer's shoulder,
There is, by the way, a new type of
wrap but little worn as vet. It is
called the “"cape-coat,” and calls to
memory the cape back ano coat front
of yesteryear. But the coat part s
longer in this model and it has
sleeves,
