When the discovery of pearls In
Black river was first made few under

first pearls were disposed of at a frac

his next lot. A few days after form'
Ing this resolution he found a larger
and prettier pearl than any he had ever
taken out. so he sent It to the dealer
with the statement that he would take
21,150 for It, and felt that this was a
very fancy price. The dealer very
promply sent hie check for 21,150.
Later Gilliland saw the dealer and
he told him he sold the near! to Tif
fany for 215,000. “But,” said the deol-
“1 was ns big a fool for selling It
Tiffany for 215,000 ea you were for
selling lt,to me for 21,150.” The dealer
went to New York to make the sale,
and felt that he had driven the bar
gain of his life when he unloaded his
pearl on Tiffany for 215,000, but hadn’t
gotten out of New York .before he
read In a paper where Tiffany had
■old that Identical pearl for 265,006. It
Is said to be, and still ranks, as the
finest fresh water pearl ever dlecov
ered.
Soon after thl* transaction Gilliland
quit hunting for pearls,himself and
went to bnylng from others.
In three months he had made 27,000,
and had the money In a bank. This
money, he thought ample to satisfy his
needs, and he abandoned his effort* to
accumulate and went to spending with
rather a lavish hand, for In a few
months hie 27,000 was gone.
He Is now digging shells In White
river. He hasn't quite as much money
as he had when at the height of his
success as a pearl buyer, but he has
made something near 21,000 elnce Jan'
uary selling pearl*. •
