August to the end of the season last year,
the crop deteriorated only 1.7, as against
an vacrage deterioration for the same
period In the nine years previous Of 16.9. A
terrible disaster was averted last year by
the extraordinarily favorable conditions pre
vailing after the first of August, of which
the early maturity of the plant allowed
it to take full advantage. This year the
crop Is from tw*o to three weeks later than
the average, and probably four to five
weeks later than last year, so that it Is
hirdly likely that last year’s autumnal
growth will be duplicated this season.”
