AIRS. MADDOX'S CLUB PARTY.
Sir*. Virgil Maddox entertained the
'500" club Tuesday afternoon at the
hnnie of Mra C. J. Maddox, at Inman
pnrk, where ehe Is spending the sum
mer.
Mr. Msddax's residence was deco,
rated with roses, ferns and palms, and
the game as* played on the wide ve
randas. A delightful luncheon was
served during the afternoon. The first
prize, a handsome hand-painted cake
plate, was won by Mrs. Larendon: the
consolation, a pair of ribbon sleeve'
holders, became Mrs. C. J. Maddox’s
nnd the guest prise, a beautiful almond
dish of Japanese design, was presented
to Mlas Flanders.

Savannah, Ob., Aug. 8.—The Inveetl-

resumed yesterday afternoon by the
police committee. Detective Davis, re
cently* suspended, was a witness, and
charged the superintendent of police
with favoritism.
One witness told of being fined 110
for using a short measure, the com
plainant being a saloon-keeper. When
the witness threatened to dopket the
saloonlst for 8unday selling McGInnlns,
known as "Big Springs,” came around

Lizzie Perkins, a young white woman
residing In Bellwood avenue, Tuesday
night swallowed an .overdost of mor
phine.
She was discovered, however, before

It Is understood Mrs. Perkins' hua
band left her some time ago and that
she has been worrying considerably,

TWO YOUNG MEN
ARE CONVICTED
OF HOTEL ROBBERY

Savannah, Ga., Aug. *.—S. H. Reid
and J. H. Henderson, two young men
convicted of entering rooms at Hotel
Tybee, were sentenced by Judge Cann
yesterday, the former receiving one
year in the state prison and the latter
five years. The evidence showed that
Henderson had planned the robberies
and watched while Reid did tho work.
Reid Is an opium fiend. The youm
men came here from Jacksonville ani_
went Immediately to Tybee, where they
began operations.

THE COLUMBIAN HALF.

Valdosta, Ga., Aug; 8.—A bank of
Valdosta recently received from the
treasury at Washington 31,000 In "Co-
lumblan" halt dollars, which It Is. hav
ing considerable trouble putting In cir
culation. When the coins made their
appearance here a few days ago, owing
to their oddity and to the fact that
many people thought they were at a
premium, they were accepted readily,
and there were many Inquiries for
them In the city. Not so, however. In
other sections. The bank shipped less
than 3100 tn these coins to an out-of-
town customer and today received a
letter from the customer stating that
the coins could not be used, as the
people there refused to accept them.
The bank has been notified that the
coins will be returned.

the new cotton firms ln Augusta, find
they will sell the bale In front of the
cotton exchange to day at auction. The
cotton was raised by H. M. Eldrlclge,
