Gordon said:
"The object of the article In qu<*>-
tlon was to Injure the first Georgia
Infantry. The motive for tha slander
ous story la unknown, but It will be
known before the Investigation con
cludes. The article sought to convey
the Impression that the regiment car
ried ball cartridge* Into th* engage
ment for blank cartridge*, and that
two companies were ordered from th#
Reid, and subjected to rigid Inspection,
one company waa ruled nut because
the men stood up In order to eee the
enemy: the other because It marched

talion, which hod-sustained the brunt
of the attack, was assembled and
highly complimented by Colonel

12-yrar-otd Kirby Brown told a pitiful
tale of how hla father, J. T. Brown, had

until blood streamed down hla body.
After this terrible beating Kirby rah

the street and carried to the station

laudanum and had It not been for the
efforts of two lady passengers and a
physician she would have died.
