WELLMAN'S SHIP
FOUND DEFECTIVE
By Private Leased Wire.
Hammerfest, Norway, Aug. 24“—Ad
vlcea received here today from Spltx
bergen are to the effect that Walter
Wellman haa abandoned hla attempt to
reach the north pole this year owing to
defects found to exist In the airship
which he was to have uaed.
The foregoing contradicts a state
ment of the Christiania (Norway) cor
respondent of the London Dally Mail,
published on August 17. The dispatch
stated that Mr. Wellman had aban
doned the attempt to reach the north
pole this year owing to the lateness of
the season.
TRY A WANT AD
Mounted Officer Zach Rowan, whose
name Is spoken In a tone of
among the negroeB and the lower
classes of whites of Atlanta, had
quite a little experience Thursday
night, In that he saw for himself what
terror his name Inspired.
During the wee sms' hours of Fri
day morn while Zach Rowan was
slumbering peacefully, (It la said how
ever, that Zach never sleeps.) some
one rapped on* h|s front door and told
him to come down In a hurry.
When the officer reached the scene
of the trouble he learned that a negro
had been trying to break Into the home
of YV. H. Haney, 133 West Fair. While
he and Haney and a neighbor tv
In an alley investigating, a negro
came down the alley at full tilt. This
flight started a chase which kept up
for more than eight blocks, a crowd
of about fifty men and boys following
and firing at the negro.
In the meantime. Officer Rowan was
Investigating the neighborhood
witnesses, and on entering a negro
house he found a colored man wrap
ped up In a bundle of bed clothes still
wearing his street clothes. The negro,
whose name was George Holmes, con
fessed to Rowan and was lined 325 and
costs by Acting Recorder Walter Tay
lor, councilman from the Sixth ward.
Ed Fowler, the negro who was
chased, said that he had been up In a
club room and someone shouted, “here
comes Zach Rowan,” so he "Jemped
out and flew."
Fowler was fined 35 and costs.
VOLUNTEER FRIENDS
Mayor James G. Woodward has Is
sued the following letter of thanks to
the friends who voted for him In his
race for county treasurer:
Atlanta, GA, August 24, 1906.
To my many friends in the city of
Atlanta and Fulton county who cast
their ballots for me In the recent elec
tion I wish to extend my most sincere
thanks, and especially do I thank them
because their every ballot was volunta
rily cast for me, as I had no literature
of any description and all the workers
In my behalf were volunteers. While
I led my opponents In the city, my ma
jority here was not sufficient to over
come the vote In the county outside of
Atlnnta.
Although a great many of my warm
friends did not want to vote for me
for county trcaaurer because of the plea
that my services In the past had been
too valuable In city affairs, and be
cause they had a desire to keep me In
a more active political life, yet I at
tribute my defeat more to my Inability
to get out from the mayor’s office and
make a more active campaign,
account of the many duties of my po
sition, which I could not get my consent
to neglect In any way, I was unable
to visit more than one-third of the
business houses, none Of the office
buildings nnd only elgnt or ten of the
shops of the city. My having received
such' a magnificent vote under such
conditions makes my debt of gratitude
the more binding.
With no uiikind feelings to any of
my friends who were committed to oth

near Ellenwiiod, N. Y„ where she died.
Her daughter, Mrs. Claude N. Kress,
of New York, was with her at the time
of her death. She hus had heart trou
ble for more than a year, but Jt was]
not thought to be serious, so that her
sudden death came as a distinct shock
to her many friends.
Mrs. Sheehan in lineally descended
