were rather light during the first hour,
only 131,000 aharea, but there was buy
ing of a good character In the Harrl-
man Pacifies, St, Paul and Union Pa-
ene. The Steels were Inclined to hold
off, waiting for the bank statement that
msde a most remarkable showing, con
sidering the loss made by the banks,
reserves decreasing only >1,120,000,
leaving surplus reserves at >2,3*0,000,
loan, decreasing >7,3M,000. The mar
ket was quite active during the last

to cover, as well as In a number of the

New Orleans, Sept. 1.—The Times-Demo-
crat says: The cotton year terminated with
crop prospects good, prices fair, the- wdrld’i
trade In manufactured goods large, but
with a rndlcnlly curtailed public Interest In
the speculative aide of the staple. Early
In December 13.46 was paid for the May op
tion. Late In August the October option
sold ns low n* 8.89. In 1905 May sold ns
high ns 11.20, while October sold as low a*
6.76, January touching 6.28. The high nnd
low range for 1901 was: July 18.14, Decem
ber 8.96. These comparisons prove little,
more than the fnet that when the gambol

of course, each for the other's horns.
Yesterday's cotton mnrket was n fitting
finale to a season which Included many a
week of singular dullness. Covering over
the holidays nnd precautionary measures
against the coming bureau report gave
tone and stamina to the trading at times,
though the clone vrnn well under the pre
vious day's Inst figures. The season ended
with December contracts at New Orleans
quoted at 9.01. while middling spots had de*

Chicago Inter-Ocean: Corn In Oma-
fia broke 3-1c yesterday and Septem
ber cloaed at 43c. /
Cash business In wheat In Chicago
esterday was only 16,000, all the cash
landlers reporting the demand poor.
Sales on corn were 100,000 bushels
and oats 126,000.
At the seaboard exporters sold 96,-
000 bushels wheat and 90,000 bushels
oats. Charters were made for 70,000
bushels corn at 15-8c to Buffalo.
More returns.from the threshers In
the northwest were received. A num
ber of them came from points where
conditions were ■ raid to Indicate light
yields.
Frederick, S. Dak., says the average
of spring wheat will be eight bushele
and durum 15 bushels.
Aberdeen says the yields are less
than expected.
Larlmore, N. Dak., reported 672 bush
els raised on 30 acres or 22 1-2 bushels
per acre, and 725 bushels from 20
acres and 251 bushels from six acres.
All graded No. 1 Northern.
Grafton. N. Dak., reports yields of
16 to 18 bushels.
Winnipeg reported yields of 20 to 22
bushels per acre.

the board of trade ware nervous, the
September wheat situation being to
the liking of the bulls, and it closed
I l-8c higher. The other months In
wheat were up l-8$93-Sc. Corn closed
l-85pl-2c higher. Oats were 5-84110
higher. Provlslone mainly 2 l-2c bet
ter.
Cash sales here were 182.000 bushels
wheat, 60,000 corn and 145,000 bushels
oats.
Transactions at the seaboard were
six loads wheat, two of corn and 75,-
000 bushels oats.
Primary receipts of wheat 464,000
bushels and of Corn 601,000 bushels,
compared with 1,018,000 and 580,000
bushel*, respectively, a year ago.
Clearances were 352,00(1 bushels
wheat, no corn and 2,200 bushels oats.
