to have absolutely no support of a kind

New York,. Sept, 27.—Prices moved
about feverishly in'the mornlngr’s mar
ket, with no.aqttled trend'ln either di
rection. The one fact that wns evi
dent In the, very confused movement
wap that mahip.ulatlon' was present to
an unueual degree on both sides of the
market A powerful party was at work
-endeavoring'to drive stocks down; on
the other hand, strong support was
extended at all time*. These two con- I
flirting forces were about evenly bal- I
anced during the early hours of busi
ness. The market opened at about last
night's level, rose sharply for a time
and then broke rapidly on a rumor that
the city of New Orleans hod been prac
tically destroyed by a tidal wave. This
story waa promptly denied, and Louis
ville, Atlantic Coast Line, Illinois Cen- ;
tral and other of the Southern stocks,
which had fallen violently on the first |
report, recovered with equal sudden- i
ness. Canadian Pacific on buying or- j
ders, partly emanating from London, 1
made p new high record, and the spe- ;
dels were better -maintained than
usual. J&eceBt favorites, us the Copper,
the Pacifies, Baltimore and Ohio and
St. Paul, were rather notably heavy
during the morning.
