POLITIC8 IN THE WEST.
By 8idney C. Tapp.
The Bryan sentiment Is still growing In
this western country. In the last few day*
I have been through Indiana, iyinot*,
Missouri, Nebraska aud now Into Colorado,
and It la Bryan everywhere. It Is remark
able to me the change in public sentiment.
The people—the great masses— seem to
have reached that point where party lines
are disregarded—It la principle that they
want—the enforcement of law and order
against commercial anarchy and piracy of
the trusts and combines—the oil trust, the
coni trust, the Iron trunt, the sugar trust,
the tobacco trust and the greatest of all.
the railroad trust, etc.
There are only five men that public sen
timent will at all stand for in the next
election. If public opinion remains ns it la.
First, William J. Bryan; second. Theodore
Roosevelt; tbtrd, LaFollette. of Wisconsin:
fourth, Joseph w. Folk, of Missouri, and
fifth, William R. Hearst, of New York.
If nubile opinion remain* ns It is, It
would be folly for either party to go be
yond the five men as candidates—the peo
ple are determined.
The other day while passing through Illi
nois, I said to a Judge on the train, T 'What
was the Republican majority In your state
for Roosevelt over Parker.’ 1 "Three hun
dred and flee thousand." was the reply.
"How will your state go If Bryan Is nomi
nated?" I asked. "A hundred thounnnd
for Bryan." was the reply. "How do you
account for this change?' 1 I asked. "The
people see that what he told them ten
years ago I* coming true aud look upon
him as the innn to carry out what Roose
velt has begun during this admfnistrntlou
In destroying commercial anarchy," was
the reply.
On the same train wan a leading business
man and a lifelong Republican from
Kanaka—his brother Is a leading Judge op
the bench In Indiana. 1 said to him:
"What about Kansas. If Bryan Is nomi
nated." "He will carry It from twenty-
five to fifty thousand. ’ was the reply.
"I have been a life-long Republican nnd
have a brother on the bench In Indiana
ns a Republican, but If Bryan fa nominated
thla Is one time I am going to vote a
Democratic ticket and my feelings are but
the expressions of thousands of other life
long Republicans In my atate," continued
‘p.
In my tour through Nebraska I found
lie people proud of Bryan, nnd l»oth Re
publicans and Democrats seem to agree
♦hat the state.will go for Bryan by a large
majority this 'time. They believe hi* Is
going to be nominated nnd elected thla
time, and o state pride seems to be aroused.
And let me here say that Nebraska Is a
K ent state. As far ns the eye can see.
e growing corn, waving wheat and
lowing herds greeta the vision everywhere.
While passing along the streets In 8t.
Louis the other day I passed a book store.
In the window were erected high stack*
of Hon. Thomas E. Watson's inngnslne.
"The Jungle" and "The Struggle." Like «
father proud of his first born. I went
In and remarked. "I see you have your
window filled with two l>ooks nnd a mnga-
sine. You must he selling them." "^nu
bet; they are stirring up this reform, nnd
Bryan sentiment, nnd that Is what the peo
ple want." he replied. I went on proud
of the reform sentiment, and one or “
causes.

"Don't," said the poet again, earnest

singer and wrote prose because he had
a stomach that cried like any common
man’s for bread.
"It’s no good," said the stranger
again. "I'm going. I'm a fool, I know."
"Now you come to mention Jt,” mut
tered the poet, looking for any diver
sion that might turn his friend’s
thoughts.
"But I'm going," the other added has
tily.
"Take a gun, then."
"Not a gun for me. It’s all damned
nonsense."
But, man alive, the Barhary coast
tonight Is hell with the lid on. You'll
friend boarded a Market street car
and rode to the ferry house. Then
he struck along the water front In the
bright light and deep shadows, the
rigging of the ships hanging like black
webs silently In the still air. The
night was oppressive with a wet tropi
cal heat, the waters of the hay lapped
mournfully against the plies of the
wharves and swam In eddies under the
gleaming lights from the portholes of
the silent steamers. A drunken sailor,
cursing as he went, stumbled heavily
against him and riehocheted Into the
darkness Into a pile of empty crates.
He slipped to the ground and lay
l**plng sturturously where he fell.

wildly up In the light from the win
dows of nn Italian mfe, swung out of
the doorway, her hair flying behind her
iinbralded. She picked a stone from
the street nnd flung It rft one of the
windows, but it fell short and she
stood shaking her flsta at the house,
railing Incoherent Imprecations. Two
big men walked up to her out of the
gloom nnd caught her each by an arm.
Rhe wrestled with them savagely and
howled for all the world like a mastiff
in pain.
The stranger walked over and stood
watching curiously. He could see the
people, through the windows, In the
cafe, eating, dancing nnd drinking quite
undisturbed by the pandemonium Just
outside on the sidewalk. The woman
Jerked one of her arms free nnd dug
her claws deep Into the flesh of the
face of the man on her right. He
spluttered and swung his right flst sav
agely straight ggainst her chin. She
slipped silently to the ground, her
mouth gaping. A policeman, looking
vast and minatory, atrode Into the
light from nowhere and swung his club
swiftly like n flail. One, two, It came
down quickly on the heads of- the two
men nnd they threw forward beside the
woman. The policeman picked up a
crushed newspaper from the sidewalk
and wiped the blood from his club.
Then he walked over to. the stranger
and peered straight between his eyes.
"O," he grunted, satisfied, "What fell
you doin’ here?”
"I'm surveying your beautiful city,"
said the stranger.
"O’ ’ome," advised the policeman.
"O’ 'ome to your momma and tell her
to put you to bed." He went to a
box on a telegraph pole and sent In a
call for a police van. A small Sal
vation army contingent with a big
drum and a cornet and one flaring
torch marched past, cracked voices ris
ing dismally—
There Is a gate that stands ajar,
And through Its portals gleaming—
A Visit to a Cafe.
The stranger pushed open the cafe
door and walked In. The place was
crowded with men and women. The
all was thick with smoke and reek
ing with the fumes of stale beer. A
mechanical piano, Accompanied by a
Addle and a trombone, was playing
"One Rummer Night in Munich." Men
ami women were dancing, or trying to
dance In the congested space between

In the open air. The moon had risen,
and by the waterside further down the
