the cotton market, trade wa» active and
first price* were unchanged to 4 point*
higher on better cable*, and assurance*
that notices Issued for about 50.000 bale*
would be stopped. The bear trader* nev-
ertbetesa put out a lot of cotton in an ef
fort to force a break. At the end of flf-
teen minute*, prices were holding their own
nr a I tout 2 point a under tbo opening
range.
’ The wire* were working badly this'morn
ing. and the speculative markets, espe
cially cotton, are netlog aa though It 1*
a guess as to whether prices should ad
vance or decline, the majority apparently
taking the short side of the guess.
News Is very scarce ns to the dnmnge
sustained by the crop from heavy rains
and high wind; but the bears, working on
the theory that “no news Is good news,"
received from sections lu which
of a serious nature Is claimed by tue
bulls.

visited by a tidal wave disaster almost

It would have to be a remarkable tidal
wave Indeed to reach the Crescent City and

graphic service seemed to give color for a
time to sinister rumors, and It wna in the
excitement natural to such a time that
prices were forced up sharply on October
and to o more moderate extant on other
months. The weather bureau predicted rain,
moreover, In the Mississippi valley, Geor

bulls nnd hoped for, hence our market
did not open ns strong as expected. The
bulls had expected the damage reports
from the cotton belt on account of the
storm to enable them to run the short*
to cover In n hurry. But, Instead, the

during the antlre session. One or two
big people started the selling and there
were many small traders to trail on
before the close. Corn, oa>a and pro

Weekly clearances were 4,176,000
buahela wheat and 466,000 buahela corn
compared with 3,065,000 and 1,133,000
buehela, respectively, a year ago.
Cath salt* here 34,000 bushels wheat,
130,000 buahela corn and 43,000 buahela
oats.
The seaboard reported 6 loads wheat.
3 loads corn and 100,000 bushels oats.
Primary receipts wheat were 1,334,-
000 buahela ami corn 646,000 buahela
compared with 1,364,000 and 420,000
buahela, respectively, a year ago.
