Charlotte, N, C., Oct. 8.—Charles
Bennett, a salesman from New York,
telegraphed Chief of Police Irwin, of
this city, from Savannah, Ga., to arrest
and detain Catherine Bennett, his wife,
who was In a Pullman car on one of
the Southern's faat .north-bound train*.
The telegram charged her with rob
bery. Mrs. Bennett, a handsome young
woman, was arrested here and carried
to the police station, where she re
mained all night. She said Bennett
was Jealous of her and had kept her
locked In the DoSoto hotel at Savan
nah. She was on her way to New York
to her people.
Bennett came this morning to with
draw the charges, and tonight the cou
ple leave for New York. Bennett said
h!« wife stole a railroad mileage book
from him.

at the home on Washington avenue

terment will take mace at the titlzens’
cemetery this afternoon.
Mlea Dewberry had but recently
graduated from the Marietta High
School and waa a most estimable young
woman.

scouring the woods near Lexington In
search of the negro, Oscar Gaddy, who
shot and killed Superintendent A. H.
Eubanks, of Lane Bros.' Co. & Jones,
contractors on the double tracking of
the Southern railway, near that place,
and If he Is found a lynching will be
the probable result. The deed was
committed without provocation. Eu
banks had gone to the camp to quiet
the negroes, who were raising a dis
turbance, many being under the Influ
ence of whisky. Gaddy escaped. A
similar tragedy occurred In this vicin
ity recently, when Foreman Beacham
was shpt and killed by a negro, who Is
under sentence to hang this month.

to be W. \V. Powers, and thought to
be a visitor in the city, was killed ear
ly today at Ninety-second street and
Lexington avenue, either by a trolley
car or a big red automobile. The po

Negro. Killed by Train.

Weat Point. Ga., Oct. 8.—Sunday
afternoon when train No. 13 waa leav
ing the cor shed here. Marsh Greer, a
negro porter for Hotel Vlrent I.nngley,
got on to ride a short distance, and In
getting off the train In full speed was
thrown under the wheels und his right
arm and leg cut off and he waa other
wise hurt so that he died last night.
