Certain Moonshiners
Until Caught.
A "moonshine trust" has been ex
posed In a raid by local revenue offi
cers near Mount Airy. In which one of
the biggest Illicit distilleries ever cap
tured waa destroyed. and ■ an Informer,
who had been working wlththe officers
In that section for some time, waa
placed under arrest.
It waa discovered that while It had
bean practically an easy matter to lo
cate the places where whisky was being
made without the permission of the
federal authorities, a number'Of dis
tilleries had been "protected” by those
who had been Informing on compet
itors. The Illicit whisky trade in that
section flourished under the unusual
order of things.
One.of the men arrested, whose name
the officers refuse to divulge, was
caught "black-handed,’’ so to. speak. He
was asleep In a still captured near Cor
nelia several days ago. When'* he was
awakened the officers recognized him
as a man wine had been leading them
to the distilleries operated by compet
itor*.
While having hi* competitors put out
of business and haled before the court,
he Imd been assuring his own pals that
the "revenues" would not bother them,
nnd always steered them In other direc
tion*. The stHi 'had been in operation
for several months.
It was discovered by the of fleers
through Information given by one of
the operator* not in the "trust." It Is
said that while giving Information for
a money consideration, some of the In
formers get good sums from the moon
shiners for protection. T
