left arm crushed and being slowly
drawn into the maw of a inany-knlvcd
fodder cutter, Dr v McCullough calmly
brought out a pocket knife, opened It
with one hand and proceeded to am
putate h|s arm below the elbow.
. Later he was brought to Lynchburg,
and ills arm was again amputated, this
time above the elbow and the phy-
' sidan-farmer was so nerved for the
| ordeal that It was not necessary to
i place him under the Influence of
anesthetics. He made suggestions as
to how to proceed with the operation.

Hayes, the only surviving daughter of
the president of the Confederacy, In a
letter written to General Htephen D.
Lee, commanding the Confederate Vet
eran*, gives un explanation of the let
ter written by Mrs. Jefferson Davi*,
which creuted much comment among
the United Daughters of the Confeder
acy.
The full text of the Mr*. Jeffer*on
Davl*’ letter wn* withheld from publi
cation. It gave Mr*. Davl*’ reason* for
having made her home in the North
after the war and criticised Mississippi,
the state of Jefferson Davis* residence.
Letter Explained.
Among other things, Mr*. Hayes’ let
ter *ays;
“A* to this letter of my mother's, al
low me to puy that It was written somo
'ten year* ago and*was prompted by a
desire to justify tier actions In the eye*
of the .Southern people, whom she loved
with unfailing loyalty and devotion.
This defense of her*elf, sent to a friend
to be read after her death, *he wrote
after numberlc** article* from different
newspaper* and letter* condemning her
action* were received by her when sho
was In failing health. If she had been
coitMiilted by those in whose hand* It
was placed, the letter would never have
been made public, for only Inst Hprlng,
after discussing the fart of Its exist
ence, my mother decided to recall It,
and I hoped, until I heard of Its being
read, that It had been destroyed.

ter was sent to Julia Kimbrough, sho

sideration of her own people and
among whom she would gladly have
lived and died, if her health had per
mitted. but unfortunately she could

company from abandoning track*
tracks used by It between the eastern

It Is alleged in the petition that fifteen
months past plaintiff* made a contract
with the railroad to build a spur track
to their store. It I* claimed defendant
company intends to turn the track* and
tin* fulfillment of the contract over the
Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Loul*
or the Western and Atlantic* railroad*.
The injunction prohibit* their doing so.
Tho regular hearing of the case will be

was made here to burn the new school
building, known n* the North graded
public school. The live* of 800 children
were i/laced In jeopardy. A boy, Silas
Fink, is under arrest charged with be
ing the incendiary. The boy, It is al
leged. went Into the basement of the
building nnd *electlng a pluce near the
wooden partition* he made a pile of
rubbish and then put a match to It.
The partitions were burning brightly
when the flame* were discovered. The
janitor seised bucket* filled with water
and put out the blase, which in five
minutes might have been beyond con
trol. The boy 1* said to have confessed,
but he gives no itiotlve for setting tho
buildlug on fire.
