8IR LIPTON'8 PART IN THE
WHEELER-RIVES ROMANCE.
When Hallle Ermlnle Rives, the au
thoress, and Post Wheeler, the poet,
are married next Saturday at the
American embassy In Toklo, Sir Thom
as Llptan and his yacht Erin will have
another completed romance to their
credit, says The New York American.
That the Rlves-Wheeler match was
helped along by the Irish yachtsman 1V
not generally known, but those who
were Sir Thomas' guests on the Erin
when the Shamrock and the Columbia
competed In 1901 remember many In
teresting details of the romance.
Among'thc guests Invited for Satur
day, August 23, of that year, were Miss
Rives and Sir. Wheeler. Fate, per'
haps working In combination, had It
that they both should meet _the tender
which Sir Thomas sent to Pier A to
convey his guests to the Klin's anchor
age within the Horseshoe at Sandy
Hook.
Mr. Wheeler found Stlss Rives on
the pier almost In tears at the thought
of missing the race. He rose to the
occasion and found a yachtsman friend
who took them down the bay. The
Erin was steaming toward the starting
line through a choppy sea when sho
was bailed by the smaller yacht.
Soon a steam launch tossed, alongside
Sir Thomas' yacht. Two passengers
huddled In the stern trying to escape
the flying spray. The transfer was one
of the sensations of the day, and every
one on the Erin praised Miss Rives for
her courage, none more so, however,
than her accidental escort.
Miss Rives had a surprise for Sir
Thomas In the form of a "lucky" flog.
The ground was white silk and In the
center a huge shamrock was embroid
ered In green. She, herself had made
It, nnd offered It with an original poem.
It was this particular day that the
Erin was rammed by the United States
revenue cutter Gresham. Just after the
Shamrock and the Columbia had
rounded the stake boat. The vessels
came together with n crash, and Miss
Rives was knocked off her feet. Mr.
Wheeler was at hand to save her from
a serious fall.
The romance thus begun has never
halted, though the marriage has been
held off some time that Miss Hives
ml-lit flnlsh certain literary work. Now
she has Joined Mr. Wheeler in Toklo,
where he Is the second secretary of the
American embassy. The American am.
bassador and Mrs. Wright sent out the
Invitations f«c the wedding. j
