— Not In material things alone, nor in the triumph* of commercial en
torprtso Is writ the wholo value of • committee sont abroad for the
common welfare of the town.
There U larse eenee of comfort and no email measure of content In
the roatelouaneas of public aenrtee, and In the flow of public spirit which
rnmee from unaelfleh effort expended for the aeneral weal. The Impulse
of cltlienihlp l( quickened with the hnowledce that abaolute cooperation

and of mutual consideration for other men'* opinion* como from aueb aa-
i soclitlon.
Hut abnre all renke the benefit of established comradeehlp and the
! causing of dtlxena to know each other si they did not before. Men who
hare lived side by side In differing vocations and have passed each other
through strenQoue year* In the transient salutation, of a day, learn on
nuch Journayii to know and to appreeiats the liner and better qualities of
their fellow,men:
Men who are rosily ■tvnewrs to each other after veers of casual con-
tact, come at these times to sea. Inside the outer girb of manner and the
filed reserves of business, tba pulse and heart beat of a fallow who
lovee and laughs and labors and long*, as all men do, for real fellowship
and for better things.
Men who have been deemed cold or selAab. men who have been criti
cised for more serious faults, melt In the warmth of unselDsh aervlco
and show themselves at their hast and worthiest.
Taka this committee of Atlantans who want In th« ettyh aervlco to
the capitol at Washington.
Not more than two or three of that committee had ever more than a
passing touch with Joe McCord. They knew him In Atlanta aa a solid man
of business, a muter of affairs. He left them with the Impress of a
royal hearted Scotchman. rugged In force, brave as a lion, tlrelau lu In
dustry, loyal, to bla friends, unaclflnhln division, tenacious as a bul Idog to
conviction, and yet withal as true and tender ad a woman to his comrade"
and his friends, i >
And Walter Cooper, serious of face and thoughtful of demeanor, tin-
rovered there a wealth of fun equal to bla dolld mine of useful Informa
tion, and wu voted a modal cltlaan by them all.
Holier! Maddox, known to a larger number, deepened In personal con-
tact the concent Ion of the gifted, cultured, high-minded eltlsen rasdy

EX-GOVERNOR JOHNSON OF ALABAMA.
Let no one, think that the forensic Interchange of The Oeorglan with

The ex-governor Is one of the Meat genial and kindly of gentlemen,

It was worth more than a week of labor and s thousand miles of trav

A week like that makes friends of fellow cttliens and there can be
no better aftermath for a clty'a life than that. *

ATLANTA'S FIRST SUBWAY.
We are beginning now to (eel our fortunes In' this bright end brave
Atlanta. ,
The (Igufes from tSs census and the government reports have set ev
ery Atlanta man to thinking of the glory and the growth of this etty that
we love, and every dtlxen now begins to realise that Atlanta has not
only prospered In day* gone by, but that she Is dssllntd to a more rapid
and larger Increase In th* coming figure. ; •
Already our thorougblare* are crowded as they art In the greater
cities of the country, our strweta are rapidly congealing with the tides <>r
traffic and- our transportation lines at certain hours arc packed and In
adequate In the demands oftravsl.
the other great Titles and carry some ot Its traffic and travel under the
ground. The mere multiplication of folks la bewildering the lines of trans
portation. Cars on tha ground, can In tba air. and cars under the ground
—everywhere, and yet there are not cars enough to earry the people who
aland In aisles, and swing on straps, and Dll the seats of every vehicle of
locomotion.
Ho thnt some dny, Atlanta, like other cities, must face the problem of
n subway.
It Is not pressing at Ihe moment, but It Is not untimely to siwculste
as to Its location when It comes. As The Georgian stated some days ago.
It Is likely that Ilia Ural subway will begin at the Junction ot the Poach-
trees, where tho two trolley line* come together, and from this point It
will run through walls of steel down Peachtree and Whitehall streets un
der the huslnnss territory until It emerges near Outhmsn's laundry In the
less congested section of the city.
The confonnstton of ttie csTth will mske -the emrauoe snrt the citt
easy for this great enterprise when Its time shall ronte. nnd at some
lime within the next two decades, necessity will doubtless clamor fur Us
completion.
And then with these great streets left open for pedestrians and for ve
hicles or the higher class, Atlanta will have two of the loveliest thor
oughfares of fashion and architectural beauty In all this wonderful coun
try In which we live. N
Tho Georgian has no Intention of prosecuting an Immediate campaign
In this direction. Imt It Is Just as well for the chitons who understand
Atlanta to become accustomed to the suggestion of a subway under the
heart of the eltv.
