Four Famous Golfers to

The best time to put out a fire is when it Ntartw. After it
gains headway you are liable to need the whole fire depart-
The sportimu ease in point is that Sunday merry-Ro-
round" trnek at Algiera. l,a. When it started last year it was
a poor, miserable little thin*;. Nobody seemed to own it, no de
rent man would race there, charges of erooked races were nu
merous and the place was a disgrace and a shame.
Tin' insiders knew how tin* races were uoiiiR to come out, the
public knew nothing and if they had the “short books” would
have taken all their money away from them in the long run and
then come buck for the pocket book.
When the Sunday raeinu plant started it was a little thinR
with no hacking in sight nnd a few pails of publicity, plus a
little action by those who had money tied up in the other
tracks would have ended it all.
Now it is a great big sporting blaze and it is doubtful if the
whole combined fire departments of the Western Jockey Club
and the American Turf Association can extinguish it.
New Orleans tolerated the track because it liked to he
thought very “wide-open” nnd very wicked.
And now those who know think the pity is foolish, and
that's all.
The little home for the Sunday sucker has grown into a big
outlaw track which now threatens to put a crimp in both the
week-.lay tracks.
Also the disgraceful Algiers whirligig is bringing Louis
iana racing into worse repute than ever before and will doubt
less spur the legislature into action. If any racing escapes it
may consider itself more lucky than wise.
A New York* paper (leaded a story about requests for exhi
bition games which the New York Nationals were receiving:
"All Want To See the (limits.”
That is either misleading or incorrect. The fans of Atlanta
certainly do not want to see them. Memphis lias refused to al
low the MctmnnTcs ihe use of the park and the last time the
hum'll visited lliriniligluiiii the people in that city made it so
warm for them that Metlraw left in an awful ImfT.
Marriott is recovering. And the Ormond festivities have
ended without a broken record or a broken neck.

Hughea in Hoapital.
Imagine my surprise this morning
when opening a letter from our old
Rallda friend, Tom Hughes, to And
that he has been down on his back In
a hoapital for the past two weeks. He
has undergone an operation which was
made necessary as the result of a blow
he received from a sledge a few years
ago while working at a forge In a
blacksmith shop.
The operation waa a auccesa In every
respect and he Is now on the high road
to recovery.
The day he wrote to me was the first
time he was able to ait up for two
weeks.
Several time* laat aummer he spoke
to me about having to undergo the
operation, hut later on put it off Indefi
nitely. He made up hie mind all of a
audden and went straight to the hos
pital to have It over with as soon as
possible. '
While lying there, more dead than
alive, he had to be humorous. He say.
that Just before coming to from under
the Influence of the anesthetic he
dreamed that he was doing some phe
nomenal twirling. He had Ed Watah
and Mordecal Brown backed clean otf
the boards. He had all the difficult
benders and shoots of the world's fa
mous but fictitious Frank Merrlwelk
He had also mastered hla famous dou

terrible spit-balls fairly on the nose for
a home run. The 1*0.000 people that
were Iff attendance at the game fairly
went Insane and showered money in
him for his wonderful feat.
He was almost buried In the filthy
stuff and had Just counted up to 14!,-

Wanted More Ether.
That was an awful blow to And It
was only a dream, and he begged to be

, how much he really did get from the
I appreciative Highlander fans. He
wouldn't- have cared If he could have
spent any of It. but to wake up before

From the description of the pile I
would Judge that he would have been

He also sent me a copy of the local

which had an account of a trip that
Tom took to Pueblo about a month ago.
From the deocripllon of the train. It
rivaled the one he took out of here to

The 8quflohing of Lipe.
While tat attendance at an Indoor
baseball game the other evening I ob
served how quickly Umpire Tint Ryan
put a stop to all protests. It recalled
a little Incident to my mind that took
place laat summer while I waa with
Savannah, when he put a damper on
one of Perry Upe's kicks In a hurry
with one of his witty remarks.
We were playing in Macon this day
and the game waa very close and ex
citing. We had a runner on second
base with two out. when Ernie Howard,
our fast center fielder, cracked out a
■creaming liner to center and scored
the runner. The ball waa thrown to
the plate to cut off the run. but waa too
late. Perry calls to the catcher to re
turn the ball to third baae. which waa
dohe and after receiving
bag and called to Ryan.
”How'» what V says Tim.
"Didn't you aee him rut
to which Tim promptly replied
“I wlah he had cut It a couple ofj
Inrhea more au wa could aee

That ataggered Perry and ended
dlapute.
How About Hewardf
= Speaking about Ernie Howard, It mp
peara to me that there la one player g
that haa been overtoakedby the higher
leaguea while the drafting eeaaon waa t
on. Hla performances while I waa ‘
with Savannah bordered on the eenaa-
tlonal at all times. One minute he
would pick a low liner off hla ahoe-
strings right behind second base, while
the next you would probably see hliu
pick one ofr the back fence, and all
with such ridiculous ease. He makes
all hard chance, look easy. He was
easily the star outfleldSr on the Sallte
circuit and certainly would look good
In some Southern League uniform. Talk
about being fast: you could fairly eee
the emoke come out of hla feet when
he anlled around the bases.
Howard's record will bear me out In
my statement. It’s a dollar to a dough
nut that the Savannah people aren't
aheddlng any tears that he waa over
looked. It wae more through hla all-
around work than anybody else's thnt

of doing on the gaa-llt one, he will

Another New-Comer.
Frank Quigley, another local player,
will be seen at third base for Columbia
and ought to make good In a walk. Ho
la still young In years, but old In ex
perience. Quigley will he a new-comer
to Dixie fana, aa he haa alwaya con-1
fined hla playing to Northern teams.
He tuia at different times played In
the Three t. Central, Western and
American Association. He waa a team
mate of Tom Hughea at Topeka, Kan.,
two years ago In the Western AhxocIh-
