But little doing iu Tennessee and Virginia Bank Bill
Fulton County Grand J ury Presentments.
We have, through committees, examined the Books of
the Clerks of the'Superior and Inferior Courts, of the
Sheriffs, aud of the Ordinaries, and take pleasure in Pay
ing that the incumbents of these several offices, so far as
we could judge from the examinations made, (which were
necessarily limited,) are faithful and efficient in the dis
charge of their duties.
Tlie condition of the Sheriffs' Dockets anterior to the
incumbency of the present officers, is such as to call for
some action from the proper authorities of the county.
In many cases there are no entries showing what dis
position has been made of Ji. fas. placed iu the hands of
former sheriffs for collection, or where the papers them
selves are to be found. It will be admitted by all, that
the books kept by any office, of the county ought to show
what action he took in reference to matters of public con
cernment placed in his bauds, and what disposition lie
made of the papers connected therewith, upon retiring
trom office. We dissent from the recommendation of onr
predecessors at this term, proposing that a commission
of two persons be appointed to examine into aud report
upon the condition of the County Records to the next
grand jury, believing, as we do, that the cost ot such a
proceeding would greatly exceed any good results that
would be derived therefrom. But we recommend that
the individuals who are in default iu this respect be re
quired (if they can be found) by the proper authorities to
come forward and make the eutries that the law required
of them while in office, and show what disposition they
made of the papers upon leaving office.
This Grand Jury being composed entirely of citizens of
Atlanta, know but little of the condition of the Public
Roads-and Bridges throughout the county ; but from the
best information we could obtain, wc think they might
be improved, and we concur in the recommendation of
onr predecessors of the lust two weeks, that the services
of the chain gang might be profitably employed in this
work.
We also unite with our predecessors of the present
term, in recommending that steps be taken as soon as
can be, to proride a safe and secure Jail, the present one
being entirely insufficient.
The County Court, organized uuder an act of the last
Legislature, having proven to be a great burden, we
would most respectfully recommend to the consideration
of our legislators, whether or not a system cannot be de
vised that will effect the object of the County Court, the
early and prompt dispos tion of minor offenses, without
imposing upon the citizens such burdens in the perlorm-
auce of jury duty.
The firm! decided, and impartial manner in which our
presiding Judge, Hon. Hiram Warner, is discharging the
important trust committed to him. entitles hint to the
respect and confidence of all good citizens, and it affords
us pleasure to declare our conviction that the course pur-
sutm by him must soon lessen crime in our community.
We desire to express our obligations to Col. W. H.
Hulsey, Solicitor-General, for his kindness and politeness
to our body during the present week.
Our thanks are also due to Patrick Fitzgibbor. Esq.,
for his polite attention to this body during the present
