Unexpected Response
• William Lyon Phelps tells this story
which he says was told him by Presi
dent Wilson:
Some Americans were discussing
English humor. In order to prove an
assertion that it was totally different
from American, one of the party, ob
serving an Englishman in the room,
challenged a friend to go nnd tell him
the funniest Amerlenn story he knew
and watch the result.
The friend took up the challenge
nnd spun the Englishman an extra
funny one. Nothing happened. Some
what nettled, the American said:
“Maybe you’ll laugh nt it tills time
next year?”
“No,” said the Englishman. "1
laughed nt it this time lust year."—

Tide and Untied
The young man nnd young woman
occupying the rear seat of the bus
were obviously returning from a trip
to Indianapolis. Oblivious to the
slouching figure In the corner they
chattered on. When the driver
switched off the Inside lights of the
bus they were attracted to the appear
ance of the moon.
“Oh look, what a perfectly beautiful
moon,” she lisped.
“Yes, isn’t It?” her companion
agreed. "And, by the way, they say
the moon affects the tide."
The figure in ttie corner stirred
uneasily. “And also the untied," it
growled.—lndianapolis News.
Stroke and Counter-Stroke
Mrs. Mildred Melville Malllson of
birth-control fame ended a lecture
in Kansas City with an anecdote.
“A childhood friend of mine,” she
said—“we’ll call him George Jones —
met me the other day In Cincinnati.
George took me to task for my birth
control views. He wound up in a re
proachful voice:
“‘I got 11 children, Mllly.'
“I stepped back. I pretended to be
horrified.
“ ‘Good henvens, George,’ I sold,
“you’ve gone stork mad!’" —Detroit
