THRILLS FOR YOUTH
PROVIDED BY CARVER
Ponies and war chargers, Arabian
steeds and wild west mustangs, high
stepping thoroughbreds and fleet-foot
ed race horses, all carved from wood,
come from a strange workshop in
Philadelphia, where Frank Carretta
has been carving out merry-go-round
horses for 30 years. Children ail over
the country shout their approval of
Ids work as they circle to the noisy
strains of the calliope. His lifelike
reproductions are said to be in amuse
ment parks from coast to coast.
These wooded horses are made
principally of white pine, a wood
which has been found capable of
standing the stress of weattier and
usage Imposed upon them, says Popu
lar Science Monthly.
Each year, about two hundred
wooden thoroughbreds leave the work
room for their active existence at
carnivals, fairs and amusement parks.
Wonders of the Deep
Placed on Exhibition
How science lias taken possession
of a tropical island and secured many
queer prisoners for “third degree” ex
amination, is told in a fascinating
series of photographs contributed to
the Illustrated London News by Dr.
William Beebe, the well known marine
biologist. Doctor Beebe and his staff
selected as their base “a speck of
land’yOflf the Bermudas known as Non
such island. They “invaded with net
and camera the private haunts of
many weird and wonderful aquatic
creatures, some of them dwelling far
down in the dark abysses of the
ocean.” Among them is a jet-black
whalelet which carries a brilliant torch
projecting from its forehead—this be
ing caught at a depth of SOO fathons.
