Writes About Dade's
Schools
0
I believe it will be of interest to
to the people generally to know
how the schools throughout the
cotsfity are getting along. I will say
in the outset I have never seen a
better interest in the schools than
at present. 1 have visited several
of the schools and am well pleased
with the outlook. It may be of in
terest to speak in detail of the
schools as I visited them. The
Head River school on Lookout
mountain is in the charge oj‘ Miss
Fannie Porter,* a lady ofexperiance
and ability,* and has an enrollment
of over forty, and the prospect is
that Miss Fannie will have a sue
ccssful terim They have a pretty
good house at that place and among
the improvements is a handsome
small library.
The State line school is being
taught by Walter M. Slump a
young man of ability, who I pre
diet will make his mark high tip
someday;
The Cloverdale school is in charge
of Rev. Will R. Mamie who is work
ing with a vim to build up a man
hood of usefulness in the (Hover
dale district. Will’s whole aim is
to do good and leave ‘record for
good behind him that can never be
destroyed.
The Cave Spring schools pre
sided Over by Miss Minnie Bible
she has an enrolcment or sere nay
eight, but some of her pupils will
go to Rising Fawn. Minnie is pains
taking and has a zeal commendable
for one of her age, and 1 believe
she will have a successful term.
The Rising Fawn Furnace school
for the negros, is in charge of Liz
zie Arrington; of Chattanooga, and
the colored people are to l>e con
gratulated in having secured such
an efficient teacher as Lizzie -and
Ought to stand by her to a man.
The Risinf Fawn school is tinder
the local management of John Hay
and wife. Prof. Hay has oner one
hundred on the roll and has just
opened school, but I predict he
will teach one of the most success
ful terms in the history of Rising
Fawn.
The Union school is under the
successful management of Jeff
Garrett, one of our best teachers
and he is controlling his school
with marked ability, but the house
is too small.
The Trenton school is under the
able management of E. (4. Carroll
and Miss Ada Lea, they are both
teachers of experience and the
school work in Trenton was never
better than this term.
Pine Grove, this school is under
the successful management of Miss
Eula Jacowayj and in my opinion
there is no better primary teacher
in the state. The children all love
her to almost perfect obedience and
the patrons are well pleased.
Miss Naomi Kalian is doing effi
cient work at New Libertyj having
an enrollnfbntof twenty six. Naomi
is an experienced teacher, and
nothing I could say would add to
her success. She has some bright
pupils. Will speak ot all theschools
as I visit them. Yours truly,
G. A. R. Bible

TOST TIME
WHILE SLEEPING
B. L, Farter Robbed in Shade
of the Old Cottonwood Tree.
The Thief Was Caught.
B. L. Porter, a genial soul, out
for a good time, came to Tenipe
Sunday and foane it just the sort
of place he was looking for. By
late afternoon ho Was having the
time of his life, but was tired, and
after being refused a drink at the
Anheuser, acted upon the advice of
the proprietor and sought a place
to rest and recuperate. The invit
ing shade of an old cot'onwood tree
along the P f & Vj, tracks lured him
and thither he wended his uncer
tain step, closely followed by an
observing Yaqui, who evidently
liked the looks of Porter’s time
piece, which showed through his
shirt pocket.
The weary one lay dowe to rest,
ami lus actions were copied by the
Yaqui, a short distance away, 1 In:
propiietor of the Anheuser J'oeame
suspicious of the Indian's actions
and called the attention of Deputy
►Sheriff Bam Reed to him. Unob
served, the two watched, and Were
rewarded by se* ing the Yaqui go
lhrough the pockets of his Victim
mid the 11 leave him asleep.
The deputy sheriff was on the
spot m njiffy and overtook the
Indian a short distance away. The
theif denied at first that IrJ had
taken the watch, hut his plot* sta
tious were of no avail, and
he very reluctantly gave it up,
whereupon he was landed in the
calaboose. All this had taken place
while Porter was peaceful!; sleep
ng away his troubles, and lie had
not the slightest idea who had lob
bed him, or, in fact, that he had
been robbed at all, vutil the officer
informed him. The watch was noi
a very valuable one, hut it> then
will furnish the Yaqui a free hoard
ing place for some time —Arizona
Gaze’te, July 27th.
We retrieved a marked copy of
the above piesumably from Mr
Porter. Wo also presume it vva>
intended for publication, but rlio
only ieason we can see v\ i y lie
shouldTwish it reproduced is to show
his friends here how very lucky
lie was in ‘‘lost time”.
