Lc e Treece Released.
Last Saturday Lee Treece went
forth from the Dade Coal Mines a
free man.
lt will be remembered that
Treece was sentenced to the peni
tentiary for the term of ten years
for the same crime for which D.
F. Walker was hanged. For good
behavior Treece had a credit of
over two years good time, conse
quently hedid not actually serve
quite eight years. The ’essees say
he was the best behaved man they
have ever had in the camp. Treece
has by hard work saved up m i 'ly
four hundred dollars while in the
penitentiary by digging extra coal
over his task for which the compa
ny pays the convicts. A few
months ago a son of Hardbarger
the murdered man went to the con
vict camp to kill Treece and would
have done so but no one would
point him out. The fact that
Treece was in Trenton Tuesday in
company with a son of Dish Smiths
both carrying- Winchester Rifles
indicates caution at least, on the
part of Treece,

Editor News: —1 should have
mentioned in a former communi
cation that the Alliance at this
place celebrated the downfall of
sugai by purchasing a barre 1 and
all taking a lick, and we might say
that mule’s and calves didnk stand
much at a chance.
News, why news around this
place is as dry as the weather, it
one has anything to write they
have to confine themselves to what
lies past or tackle what is to
come.
We would like.to hear some one
open out on the public school steal.
Say, Mr. Editor why not you by
way ol a little diversion, tell us
how much money was paid to
teachers of the public schools last
year and how many teachers there
were in the county and what was
the average salary, and let us see
if there could not be a saving by a
different, mode of distribution.
Ly the way, we are beginning to
fed somewhat proud of the impor
tance of our district court, it seems
that it will have to he in session
next term for several days. J mean
our t)74th G. M. court, Judges Vest
and Patterson presiding.
Mr. W. J. Townsend we think
has given up his contemplated trip
to the far west. We are glad Mr.
Townsend has decided to remain
with us gv.mie longer.
\\ hile Mr. I sham Vest was ab
seil! at Cleveland Tennessee some
one took the liberty to abstract
some honey from one of his best
bee-hives, as we are informed that
jhe has information as to who tow
i culprits are, we would suggest that
J they might make it allright with
1 some cash for damages .
Tour correspondent iiad one of
his lazy speLs last week. Perhaps
we wii say something about a fence
law in our next ii there is room in
the News for such a discussion.
Respectfully,
J B Lea.
We will attempt to furnish the
desired information in our next
issue. Ed.
The Bail.
Last Friday night was the occa
sion of the dance at the hall over
Coles store. A large crowd of
young ladies and gentlemen were
in attendance, who pronounced it
the most enjoyable affair of the
kind ever got ten up in Trenton.
Adam’s si ring band from Chatta
nooga provided excellent music for
the dancers, while Capt. Lovering
dispensed refreshments from the
stand adjoining the bail room. It
was aitcr 2 o'clock when the gav
and happy party was broken up.

From New England.
Mr. Editor: —I have received
one or two copies of your paper.
I don’t know whether you have
sent me more than that number or
not, I cannot tell you how glad I |
was to know that we once more
had a paper, and now e.itrenous T
think you are a hero. 1 think any
one “a heroin the strife” who will
try to sustain a paper of merit in
Dade. 1 can say without any in
tention of flattering you, the News
contains more attic salt than any
of its predecessors
Have you been “toting a razor
in your hat?” Like the good
old apostle, in one respect, I
have neither gold or silver, but such
as I have I give thee. Good wishes
and pie ; rs for your success
In this section of the moral
vineyard we have not had rain
enough to sprout seed for two
months, more or less. Many farm
ers did not get done breaking ,up
ere the drought set in and now
Vulcan could not forge a plow that
would penetrate the creek bottoms.
I have heard some say not one
third of the corn planted in one
mile square of New England has
or ever will come up. I have not
seen a specimen of fruit yet tins
year hut looked as though it was
recovering from an attack of the
grippe. Your Friend,
Pbe. A. Acuff.
Thanks Aunt Polly, write again.
We have not enough of heroism
about us to attempt to make good
officials out of a few postmasters
in this county but we will try to
“touch'em up” a liPh Ed.
