There has been a ball in Trenton and
the reporter writes up Editor Bock. of
State-of-DadeNews, as “cutting he fig
ure eight to perfection.” ' v hat wi 1
the deacons of Brother Brock’s church
say to that?—Evening News.
Our church approves of dancing
and that sort ot things and tin
higher we kick the belter it pleases
the devil.
While vve do not approve of the
method by which a project for an
exhibit to the World’s Fair, from
the Chattanooga mineral district
was changed into a Tri-State ex
hibit, if the unrepresented territory
to the convention acquiesces our
feeble efforts shall be devoted to
the enterprise.
Believing that sociability results
in mutual benefit to two great
minds, we called upon Bro, Shaver
of the Evening News, last Wednes-
day and found that worthy gentle
man with a box of cigarettes on
his table, puffing away in a vain
attempt to reduce his surplus in
tsllcct,
Its a little unusual to hear ot the
Cole City officials ordering pursuit
of an employee out of stripes, but
we understand a certain locomo
tive engineer of the Dade Coal Cos.,
was caught and brought back from
Shellmound where he was about
to take the train for Chattanooga
0:1 a little recreation tour. Coal
City people will understand that
this is no reflection upon anyone.
Mr. Editor: —In your last issue
we noticed an article in reference
to an imaginary assault on Jim
O’Neals head by a rat with the
idea that he was to enjoy a feast
on a nice yellow pumpkin. Lucky
he did not attack the author of
that item if he had the consequence
* would have been death to the rat
from eating a dead-beet.
Yankee'Doodle.
Yes if the attack had been made
on the authors head the rat would
have been foundered on brains in
stead of pumpkin seed. Ed.
We want a live correspondent in
verv precinct in the county and
will appreciate any communica
tion at any time : however we re
serve the right to reject, correct or
cull any communication sent us.
Of course we could not give a col
umn or two to any one correspon
dent and we request that some re
card be had to our limited space.
When we see lit to refuse a conc-
Km unication a space in our columns
for cut out a portion, it does not
signify that the letter is without
merit, but that it does not meet
with our approval which of course
is not sufficient to stigmatize the
writings of anyone.
Our reference last week to the
firm of Rising Fawn merchants
was occasioned by the receipt of a
card from the postoffice stating
that said merchants had refused
to take our paper out of the offie .
The gentlemen have since paid
their dollar like the good citizens
they are and have our unbounded
confidence in their public sphited
ness and in their intention !o do
the light thing when it comes to
the support of a home enterprise.
Both say thev expected to taka the
News if they had to kick us all
over the county.
All right boys pay up, then kick
Uf as much you please, we be
lieve in a fellow having whatever
he has paid for.
The World’s Fair Convention
which met in Chattanooga Wed
nesday revolutionizes the whole
theory as to what powers delegates
to a convention may assume to
bind a people not represented. Of
course as to the territory not rep
resented the acts of tne -convention
count far nothing more than a bare
suggestion which may or may not
be ratified. The convention was
composed of del- gates from the
“Chattanooga mineral district ’ and
have the-same power to act toi the
whole of the United States and
Mouth America as it had to assume
to act for the whole of Tennessee
Alabama and Georgia. /■
We trust the hodv of the Alii
auoemen of Dade will not concur
hi the bee sting opinicffi expressed
in our letter from Ascalon. While
we are debarred of a membership
in the order and while we make no
pretention to editing an Alliance
organ, we believe the good and true
element of the order will endorse
tin* sentiments expressed in our
columns. At heart we are a firm
believer in the original principles
of the Alliance as set forth in its
constitution ; and would work hand
in hand with the order in further
ing the objects first named. Many
of the new and impossible schemes
we condemn and shall oppose in a
fearless and frank manner. We
can’t shape the policy of thi. pa
per to conform to the ideas ot those
who would disrupt the democratic
nyrtv neither have we an inclina
tion lo do so. With this avowal,
we are willing to submit our claim
for patronage to the Alliance of
Dade.
Ascrdort Georgia.
Dear Bennie: —Two copies of
the “State of Dade News’" lie be
fore me. I read them and was
glad to hear from Dade and its peo
ple. and to know that they have a
county paper etc., but while the
paper lies before me, my eye is at
tracted by a poor bee crawling in
the yard unable to fly. Shall 1
render it assistance? Shall 1 take
it in my hand and mount it upon
wings that it may independently
soar to its hiye in safety? But
just as lam about to render it as
sistance it discloses to an Alliance
eye a suspicious looking weapon
protruding from its nether end,
and I’ll just let it alone and its life
is short any way. Yours tiuly,
W. A. Chambers.
Yes, It: would be just like one of
vour cowardly critical nature to let
the poor bee grovel in the dust and
gloat over its misery, but fortu
nately it is not altogether depend
ent upon your patronizing assist
ance to “raise it from the dust,”
and unless it is so far gone that
your tender care could avail it
naught it may yet be enabled by a
nobler power than yours to soar
far above you and if it chooses,
give you a touch of that “nether
end” you so much dread, just to
wake you up to a realization of
your littleness.
From Wildwood.
Editor News My young friend
I have been thinking for some time
I would drop you a few thoughts
but ha v. been so busy breaking up
clods and digging in the garden
planting onions, peas, raddishes,
tomatoes, Bans and such like, and
no.v last Friday we had a fine
bower, so I am equally as busy
helping Bettie pick peas, grabble
potatoes and casting a sheep’s eye
at the bean blossoms, and the
sweet potato slips have come in for
tht-ir share of attention, then there
is the melon patch to look after
and the corn and oats.
Oh my, the oats if we get
any of them, they will have to
stretch mighflv or we will have to
skim below the surface so you see
we old clod mashers have a hard
time of it in this lower world.
We have about mie-tialf crop of
apple;? and peaches.
Wheat is looking well and al
most ripe.
Pastures are getting dry, Oh why
don’t it rain.
Some of the farmers have been
cutting clover, while others are
waiting for it to grow a little
higher.
Hurrah for the Nows, we can’t
well do without it. 1 have been
drumming for it and think I will
send up several subscribers soon.
You will bo at our court the Gth
iust., then you will find your dollar
for my subscription. Come fellow
citizens, nelp up the News by tak-'
irig the paper and paying you>- dol
lar promptly and then we will help
to make a good county paper.
Dade is a good and deserving
county as any, so hoys send in
your subscription and act the News.
Bv the way the Alliance is
booming down here since she can
vote as she pleases. Knocked the
bosses oft'the track and the alli
ance engine is making sixty miles
an hour toward the presidential
chair. In we’ll show him soon
[ the little fox can fool the coon.

An Accident.
While Mr. W. 11. Bowman, the
Manager of the Enterprise Manu
facturing Company, was dressing]
down a pulley at the mill last Sa f
urday, the pulley bursted and half
of it struck Mr. Bowman on the
breast and chin, knocking him off
the top of a bolting chest and pre
cipitating him to the floor some
twelve feet. The shafting was
turning was turning at a rapid rote
of speed at the time and hui Ft
pulley struck the head instead u :
Mr. Bowmans breast the accident
would probably have been more

man is able to travel around on a
sprained ankle with considerable
soreness about his chin.
