A Big Fish.
Although a little late in the sea
son John McMahan furnishes the
biggist local fish story brought to
our notice. John went seining
last Friday with several gentlemen
less exciteable than himself and
after seining for some time finally
succeeded in collaring the monster
buffalo of Lookout creek. When
the lucky dip was made John was
pulling one end of the seihe and
we can imagine Johns ex
pressions of delight better than
any newspaper man could write
| them. Mingled Vith the ‘‘Lord
i God’s,” “Just look at him Jane”
j and -‘the finest ou earth,” the yells
of Tom Massay were insignificant.
The fish weighed 18 pounds and
measured two feet and eight inches
l in eng h. Col. Tom Gray vouches
j for the above story except as to the
length and weight which John
i alone furnishes.
From Rising Fawn.
Dear Dade: —Now that sounds
ight doesn’t it, for we all love old
Dade. Then if we do, why not
show our devotion in a pratt :.al
Manner by bucking right up to
Ihe State of Dade which can and
vi 11 be worth as much to us in
•roportibn to the amount of capi
.al invested as the Times or Even
ing News of Chattanooga are to
Hamilton county. But, Mr. Ed
itor, doesn’t this make your posi
tion a very responsible and sacred
one? Certainly. But most of the
responsibility is on the people
whose spokesman you are. Did
you ever know a people with a pa
per toyyhieh they could and would
point w.tli pride, who w re not
themselves intelligent and pros
perous? Echo answers no.
Now I know that my communi
cations are not edifying but since
you have said write again I’m go
ing to stir around amongst, mv
neighbors while its too hot to plow
and tell you something about them
occasionally. In fact i don’t see
why we cant make our paper one
that the old maids and children
will fuss over on its weekly arrival
through their anxiety to learn all
that’s happened in the county this
week. We can if each of us will
make it a personal matter, as we
should, and get our neighbors to
subscribe. But while you are just
ly abusing usfoi our shortcomings
on this line, let me whisper this in
your year:
Why don’t you publish for our
safety the A. G. S. Railroads
schedule from which we may learn
the exact time their trains may be
expected to pass our stations and
public road crossings at 40 miles
an hour with long traius of long
coaches occupied by very few peo
ple with long faces? No wonder
another road whose stock isn’t
worth fifteen cents on the dollar
can buy it. 1 guess the other road
wants it to water its already weak
stock with. But Mr. Editor you
w ill notice that the road which pays
trie biggest dividends to its stock
holders is, the one that stops at ev
ery road crossing to pick up the
buxom lads and lassies.
Why! the best paying road I
ever knew was one w.fich wasn’t
able to buy wood enough ahead to
let it season, so in the summer
when the §ap was up and they had
to stop every mile or so to raise
steam, the passengers thought they
were stopping just to let them pick
black berries, so they were pleased
and gave the road all their money
and it prospered.
Then, why don’t you publish
weekly ihe market price of the
things wj need or have to sell?
You can and we will soon learn to
rely on you for it.
Also confiscate the space given
to that fellow for advertising for
which you know he will never pay
a cerjt and use it for the almanac
signs. We need them too.
Next week I will indulge in lo
ca isins and personalities and in
due time will tell you all T see or
hear. Most of which will be either
reliable or doubtful but none the
less interesting to a good many
whom I’ve had an eve on for some
time. 1 hope vour other corres
pondents will continue to write,
their letters are interesting and in
structive. U. U.

Editor News :—Sir. At a meet
ing held on last Saturday for the
examination of teachers it was
decided by those present to call a
meeting of all the teachers in the
county to assemble at the court
house in Trenton Saturday June
20th inst., at 10 o’clock a. m., for
the purpose of organizing a teach
ers association. The benefits to
be derived from such an organiza
tion are too obvious to be com
mented upon here, and it is the
earnest desire of the writer that all
j the teachers in Dade county will
| lend their aid in this enterprise.
! By kindly giving this article room
in your paper you will confer a
favor upon the teachers of Dade
county and oblige,
Jxo. M. Watson.
