constantly in tbe saddle during tbe day rest
ing many of the nights with our home* sad
died and sometimes briddied. During the
time I was five separate timea engiged with
the enemy and have once been a prisoner of
war, escaping in the darkness of the night.
Daring the night of the 18th the enemy,
near or quite four hundred strong under Gen'
oral Kilpatrick, Sherman's chief of cavalrys
attacked and drove in our extreme left pick
eta, continued the advance, driving every'
thing before them until they came near the
West Point railroad where by a rapid move
and parallel vroad our brigade, (Ross's, Gen
era! Jackson's division of cavalry) or at least
a part of them, took position on the railroad
and fired volloy after volley Into the enemy
as they crossed tbe road, after which we again
doubled quick time until we again gained
their front, v hen we continued fighting and
failing back towards Jonesboro on the Macon
mid Western railroad until we got to the head
waters of Pilot river about three miles from
town, where we made sstanil for two hours or
more, during which conslderanle skirmishing
anil mi tillary firing took place, wo losing a
lew men killed and wounded, eneiny'a loss
unknown.
We were compelled to fall back into the
town, wher the enemy aoon bad a batery
planted upon an eminence near the depot and
commenced shelling the town. General
It ns, who had only four hundred ell. c i
men, ordered us to withdraw, which 1 ac
knowledge was done with an Indecorous and
unnecessary haste and some confusion, but
which was caused by our homes, exposure to
bunting shells, and to an errontotia idea
that we Were bring IIsilked on the left. One
citir.eis, a (Mr, Gbristian] was killed. We
retreated down the railroad, one mile, met a
train with a brigade of infantry oil hood,
halt 'd, camped ter tbe night winch was now
upon us, at (lie house of a Mr (lump.
Daring the night thek7th Texas being on
picket duty, continued a desultory light with
unimportant results. The enemy's and our
pickets stood near midway between otlr camp
and Jonesboro hotel. At daylight our hrt
gatle and General Reynolds's infantry
marched in line of battle Into town, found
the tueniy had gone on the Decatur road
We then mounted, while the infantry, march
ed to novejoy station and took position. We
overlook them at bee's mill, fought for two
or three hours with our (third Texas reg)
killing lllteen or twenty. 'They retreated Inn
wo again overtook them on lira McDonough
mail, where we all dismounted and formed
behind a fence in an o.herwiseopnn aud bold
lipid about half way up a long and gradual
eminence, the enemy being on the lop and
over it in the hollow beyond. Onr horses
Wcrs six or seven hundred yards in the rear,
in slid hear lira McDonough road and be
tween us and them was a cornfield slid an
open oue, in the latter of wh toh we were post
ed. We were soon ordered to charge the
enemy across tbe open field anil take tint
fenoerall works upon the eminence. Our
regiment ou the lett and the Ninth Texas on
loir center charged, took the works driving
the enemy to stronger works beyond, an
forint tl of fenoerails. Assoon aswereached tint
first works the enemy oponed upon us will:
grsiH'sbot from the second work, not two
hundred yards distant. We were ordered to
fail back behind our first and only enlreuoh
incut. By this time our auimuultlou was
marly exhausted, and the brigade hail not in
fine over three iiuudredand fifty orfourlttiu-
???drctl men. We, however, formed at right
tha brigade trussing it, with our one piece of
cannon on the right. During our lighting
the main body of the enemy (all cavalry) It ail
gone ou to ti e station where they unexpect,
edly run into General Reynold's-brigade of
infantry anil were repulsed. The euetiiy be
hind the crest of the hill formed into .three
caimans, charged our little command at full
run, some with drawn aabrea. and soma with
pls'ols. We fired until the dllfiirent colonels,
awing WO were out numbered about ten to
one, Ordered a retreat to the woods In our

a'range feature of tbe war, this incongruity of I
Johnson's connection with tbe struggle.
In passing judgment upon General John
son's very extraordinary record as a confeder
ate general one most estimate what be ooun I
seller! that was not followed, as well as what I
he dir). In nothing wav Johnston more re-1
markable; than in bis grasp of the great I
strategic qttrstionaof the war and bia pretlic I
lion of results. In every leading movement!
with which he was connected he mapped out I
ti e proper plan of operations and in every I
case he ws?? strikingly confirmed, though in I
several instances his opinion was dissented
tart to be signally vindicated I
afterwards. The fac is that Johnston, so I
far as a comprehension of the lineof military [
conduct proper to be pursued was concerned, I
was miqucstionally the master mind of the I
south.
Johnston constantly evinced the keen ac-1
enney of his military comprehension, and in |
the same connection illuit-ated that remark I
able fa'ality of his of having hfs judgment I
thwarted by others with the tile result of its |
signs! vindication. Johnston's genius was!
conspicuously hut most mournfully verified I
by the thundering failure of others It was I
a curiom fa'ality that kept up the anomalous I
experience of this gifted commander that the |
disasters < f the came from the blunders of I
hfs subordinates, instead of the successes I
achievable ny the enforcement of his counsel, [
kept his supreme capacity established.
Hooker ow thk fionrilKRS Hot,runt.???That |
was a very imodsome tribute that M-jor Gen
eral Joseph Hooker paid to the southern sol
diers. lie gave bis testimony under oath I
be 'ore the congressional committee on the |
conduct of lira war. Here are his words:
' Our artillery had always been superior to I
that of the rebels, as was also our infantry I
except in discipline; and that for reasons not I
nectssary to mention never did equal Lee's I
army- With u rank and file vastly inferior |
ti otlr own intellectually and physically
that army bad by discipline alone, acquired I
character for steadiness and eflicleucy un
irpasted, in my judgment, in ancient or mud
rn imes. Wa have not been able to rival it."
There are those who will perhaps not agree I
with General Htsiker as to tha basis of this |
remarkable "steadiness and efficiency of i
southern solders, which he thought the fed
eral troops bad not been able to rival, buistiil I
"fighting Joe Hooker's??? supreme testimony I
that our men had shown au elhcieucy never I
surpassed in ancient or modern times, stands I
tor all Unis as the estimate of a brave and I
capable judge and critic. He may not be I
correct as to the cause ot lira fact, but the I
fact as t -stifled to by him remsios established I
by that strongest of proof???the favorable evi-1
deuce of a hostile witness.
It will ciente some question whether
vastly physically and intellectually inferior!
soldier could ho more steady and efficient!
than the vastly physically and intellectually I
we do not try to reconcile I

Tmb Anomaly or Job Johnstok???* Career.???
General Joseph K Johnston's career in the
late war presents perhaps the most remark-
ab'e anomaly of military annais. From the
beginning to the end he was distrusted and
dejnveiated by the confederate authorities,
yet be held from tint to last the confidence
and admiration of armies aud people, and
every effortof the several made, to retire him
toobscuritv, but strengthened hiaiiu popular
eateem and resulted in calling him to new ex
altation of power and new display of genius
and increase of fame. It aeetued ini possible to
dispense with him. The public outcry for
his installation in responsible place w??s ir-
resistable. His genius was openly decretnl
and his administration'condemn*! by his
superiors, vet in vain. The people stubborn
ly betiared in him, and the aoid:ers fought
under his general#hip with loving enthusi
asm. And while he labored uuder a ronti
uous censure from tye confederate rulers he
enjoyed a constant triumph of praise by the
muses of the people. It certainly presenm a
