The Council met pursuant to adjournment. Prc

By Alderman Sturgis: Resolved, That all appli
cations for making of co:i i acts for tl ( e crossing of the
bridge,for the present y.<r, shall be made So the Coun
cil hy presenting the fc..oia to the Clerk in writing,
setting fcrlh such fact ; iclatife to the tolls that would
by them be paid, the number of ihe applicant’s fanJ.v,
the distance from the B iJge, &c., whose duty it shall
be to lay the sa no before the Council at the next re
gular meeting thereof, provided no applications will be
received afier the lOtli d.ty of February next.
By Alderman Lewis ; lit solved, That the Mayor
appoint a committee of three to examine and report
the necessary number of hands for ihe use of the city
the present year. Whcienpon Aldermen Bass, Stur
ges anl Lewis were appo nted as that conuriittee.
On motion of Alderman Sturges,tbc Council agreed
to the following Ordinance :
13t. Be it ordained, that there shnll be appointed five
competent persons, as Port Wardens for the city of
Columbus, for the ptesent municipal year, whose duty
it shall be, after they shall have been sworn into office,
to attend the call of any person or persons Ibr the pur
pose of making suircys on either Steamboats, Barges,
Boxes, or other water craft, and on all goods, wares
and merchandise damaged on either of said boats or
water craft, and to furnish to such person or persons,
so applying, certificates of such survey.
2d. Be it further ordain and, that the said Port War
dens shall keep a proper record of all surveys by them
so made, and all their action had therein ; and that
said records shall at all times be open for the inspec
tion of any and every person interested, and to supply
them, if required, with a copy of survey.
3d. Be it further ordained, that the said Port War
dens shall, among themselves, establish an • ffice, con
spicuously situated within the limits of this city, and
that the location of said office be published in one of the
public prints of said city, s.ai I office to be designated
by the name and style of ‘ Port Warden’s Office.’
4tlt. Be. it further ordained. Tha for surveying a
Steamboat, they shall he entitled to the sum of twenty
dollars ; for surveying a Barge, the stun of fifteen dol
lars; for surveying Box sor other wafer crafts, the
sum of ten dollars, and for surveying dain iged go.sls or
me chandize, the sum of six dollars per day each,
whilst engaged.
sth. Be it. turther ordained, That a majority of said
Fir! Wardens shall he deemed sufficient to constitute
a Board for the tran-action of business.
The Council then proceeded by hallo’ to the election
of five Port Wardens for the City of Columbus for the
year 1839. The ballots being received and examined,
it appeared that A. Levison, James Kivlin, Hiram
Young, Joseph L. Morton, and Win. Biair, were duly
elected.
Council then adjourned to Saturday, 12.1i inst.

The Council met pursuant to adjournment. Present
his Honor tlie Mayor, and Aldermen Allen, Bass,
Brooks, Holland, Kirvin, Lewis, McNair, Moses,
Sanders, Sturgis and Watson.
Alderman Sturgis offered the following Resolution :
Resolved, That all persons retailing spirituous
liquors in the City of Columbus, in any qunnries less
than one quart, shall pay a license ot fifteen dollars,
and the sum of one dollar and twenty-five cents to the
Clerk for issuing Ihe same; and it shall be the duty of
the Cl erk to publish, once in each month, the names
of all the persons who have taken out licence in pur
suance of this resolution: whereupon, on motion of
Alderman Bro .ks, the word fifteen wa-’ stricken out
and the word fifty inserted in lieu thereof. On agree
ing thereto, the yeas and nays were required to be
recorded—yeas 8, nays 3. Those who voted in the
affirmative were, Aldermen Holland, Bass, Moses,
Lewis, Sanders, Watson, Kirvin and Brooks; lhose
who voted in the negative were, Aldermen Alien,
McNair and Sturgis.
By Alderman Lewis: Resolved, That his Honor
the Mayor appoint a Committee of three to represent
the City Council in the building if a Court House and
City llail; and that they be authorized to act in co
operation with the Committee appointed hy the Infe
rior Court, according to the plan and contract for said
public building, agreed on by the Inferior Court and
the City Council, during the year 1838 ; whereupon
Aldermen LcwisftSturgis and Moses, were appointed
as that Committee.
By Alderman Sturgis: Resolved, That the Print
ing Committee he instructed to contract with the Edi
tors of the Sentinel and Herald. Columbus Enquirer
an I Georgia Argus, for the publishing the proceedings
of Council, provided the same does not exceed the
sum of one hundred dollars each.
By Alderman Brooks: Resolved, Tat the City
Council appropriate three thousand dollars for the
purpose of procuring engines for the use of the City,
referred to the Committee on Engines.
By Alderman Watson: Resolved, That the Marshal
proceo ii nn ■ liately to grade Oglethorpe st., between
St. Clair an I Crawfjrd streets; an 1 also to remove ob
structions in the side walks of said street, [adopted ]
In agreeing thereto, the yeas and nays were required
to be recorded—yeas G. nays 3. Those who voted in
the affirmative were, Aldermen Allen. Bass, Lewis,
Kirvin, Sanders and Watson; those who voted in the
negative were, Aldermen Brooks, Holland, Moses,
McNair and Sturgis.
By Alderman Holland: Resolved, That the Mar
shal proceed forthwith to drain or fill up a pond at (he
upper end of the Oglethorpe street, and also fill up the
upper sewer.
Hy Alderman Watson: Resolved, That tint Com
mittee on City Improvement* examine and report upon
the propriety of enclosing the Market House, and al o
the proper kind of enclosu.c.
By Alderman Allen : Res lived. That a Committee
be appointed, in acco-d.mce with a Resolution, passed
the last year, laying out such I its or parcel of the
Commons as may be deemed proper to rent fir the
enduing three years, and report at the n xt meeting of
Council; referred to the Committee on City Improve
ments.
By A'J ‘-mau Lewis; Resolved, Tlia’ the Mayor
be authorized to instruct the Marshal in what order nil
Resolutions and Ordinances, passed by the Council,
shall he executed.
By Alderman S'urgis : Resolved, That the Com
mittee on City Improvements, report to this Council
at the next meeting, such woiks as are most necessary
now to he prosecuted, an 1 the order hi which the pub
lic interest mav require them to be executed.
By Alderman Sturgis: Resolved, That the Com
mittee on Ways and Means report at the next meet
ing of this Conned!, the most economical mode of sub
sisting the public hands and fora nine the public mules.
By Alderman Sturgis : Ro-olvcd, That the Clerk
submit lo the Bridge Keeper all propositions for con
tracts for crossing the Bridge; that the Bridge Keeper
report to this body, through the Clerk, the probable
estimate of tolls to be collected from each applicant;
{ elopted.} In agreeing thereto, the yeas and nays
wore required lo he recorded—yens 7. nays 4. Those
who voted in the affirmative were. Aldermen Alien,
Brooks, Kirvin, McNair, Sanders, Sturms and Wat
son ; those who voted in the nega ive weie, Aldermen
Bass, Holland, Moses and Lewis.

at the corner of Oglethorpe and Randolph
streets.
The company is prepared to transact htisiness in the
various branches of Insurance, and will take risks of
every kind, viz : Marine and Inland Navigation, on
Lives, and against Fire; will receive money on Deposit,
and execute Trusts.
The company will buy and sell bills of Exchange,
and furnish Checks on New York, Boston, Philadel
phia, Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah, Augusta,
51 aeon, Apalachicola. Mobile, New Orleans, Nash
ville, and Lexington, Kentucky.
It is believed that this company can be favorably
presented to every portion of the country, or to indi
viduals, for the purposes of safety. The stock has
been distributed into such hands as are enabled to
make safe whatever may be confided to them. They
have taken it for a permanent object, to facilitate the
management, of their capital. The capital is One
Million of Dollars, with Five Hundred Thousand
paid in. The capital of the company, and the indi
vidual property of the stockholders, are liable for their
contracts.

ROBIN IIOOD
WILL stand the ensuing season at my stah.’c, at
Fort Mitchell, Alabama, ten miles below Co
lumbus, Georgia, and will be let to tnares at fifty dol
lars the season, payable the-25ih of December next,
with half a dollar to the groom. The season to com
mence the Ist day of February, and end the 15th day
of July. Mares sent to remain with the horse will be
fed at two dollars per week. Servants sent with mares
fed gratis. All proper care and attention w ill be taken
to prevent accidents or escapes, but no liability will be
incurred tor either.
PEDIGREE.
ROBIN HOOD is a beautiful chesnut, five feet
three inches high, with fine bone and muscle ; his ac
tion easv and graceful. He was foaled the IBih day
of Aprif, 1828; was got by the celebrated race horse,
Henry, the competitor of Eclipse, and sire of Post
Boy, the competitor of Bascombe. His dam was got
by Hickory, and lie by imported Whip; bis grand
dam was got by Tippo Sultan', anti he by Tippoo’Saib,
one of the best sons of imported Messenger; his great
grand dam was got by Potomac, another distinguished
son of imported Messenger; his great great grand
dam was got by imported Sourcrout; his great great
great grand dam was got by imported Figure; his
great great great great grand dam was got by Bashaw ;
his great great great great great grand dam was got
by Wilduir, out of a Delaney mare.
As to his performances on the Turf, I will barely
remark that he was the best two-mile horse of his day,
as will appear by reference to the Turf Register.

SALE.
THE subscriber will sell on liberal terms, bis Land
and Negroes. The plantation is situated on
Hatchathubbee, Russell county, Alabama, near Mr.
John Tarver’s, about twenty-five miles southwest from
Columbus,Ga., containing six hundred and forty acres,
one hundred and eighty of which was in corn last year;
one hundred and thirty acres have been since cleared
and fenced and ready for plough ; good dwelling houses,
corn cribs, negro houses, &c. &c. He will also dis
pose of, on the same terms, eighteen or twenty likely
Negroes—there being amongst them about sixteen
working hands, mules, stock, hogs, cattle, corn, fbdtier,
peas, Rc., and also farming utensils complete.
Terms—one third cash, the balance in two annual
instalments.

RASAWAY
FROM the Plantation of the undersigned, in Au
tauga county, Aia. Four Negro FELLOWS,
of the following description : Tom, a black man, about
50 years of age, bald head, of a pleasing countenance,
between 5 and 6 feet high. Peter, a colored rnan,
about 52 years of age, has sore eyes and is ruptured,
upwards of six feet high. Black Mick, a’ low, thick
man, about 54 years cf age, has large, full eyes, be
tween 5 and 6 feet fiigh, rather on the sailor order.
Yellow Mike, about the same height, or a little higher,
about 36 years of age. A suitable reward will be
paid for the apprehension of the above described ne
groes.
These negroes were purchased in North Carolina,
and brought out to this State in November last, and
will probably endeavor to make their way back, with

Montgomery, John Kirkpatrick, Esq., will scU

hand two stiff fingers, with a running sore on them,
rather round shouldered, rather bow-legged; when
walking his toes turn in a little, speaks fast if question
ed, else slow in speech ; his complexion is a copper
color; his name is NAT. His wile is about five feet
high, well set, a common black, with a scar on her left
arm, about four inches from her hand joint, about tho
size of a dollar, one upper tooth out next to the eyo
tooth; when walking her toes turn out; she is quick
spoken and high minded ; her name is PRISCILLA.
Any person apprehending said Negroes and deliver-’
ing them to me in Gwinnett county .’on the road lead
ing from Covington to Lawrenccvillo, will receive a
reward of Fifty Dollars, and all reasonable expenses
paid, and One Hundred Dollars for the prosecution to
