DR GODMAN.—Some years ago in conver
sation wiili us, he saiJ tli*t in a voyage to sea in
early life ho had seen a lad who had just begun
to be a sailor, guing out to some projecting part
of the rigging. Ilia arms wero supported by a
spar, and looking below hnn for a tope w hich "ran
across, on which his tee* should be. The rope
flew from side to side, am! it Was evident that the
poor follow was becoming dizzy and in danger ot
tailing, when the mate shouted to hi ■ , with all
his force, “ Look aloft! you sneaking lubber!
Hy thus turning away his eyes from the danger,
the dizziness was prevented, and ho found .ns
footing. And this incident, tiio doctor said, often
occurred to his mind in after life, when his troub
les grew lioavy on him, aud he hardly could finj
ground whoreon to tread. At such times, he
heard the mates shout in his oars, and lie turned
his eyes “aloft,” to tho piize upon which lie had
fastened his hopes. Wo cannot part with this
beautiful illustration, without asking each of our
readers to apply it to a still nobler purpose; to
stead, themselves in alladvorsity by looking to
wards that life in w hich there is rest, and peace
evermore; and when our ilesh and heart shall fail
us, and wc can find no support under our feet, to
cock it by looking aloft, to him, ‘‘who is tho
strength of our hearts, and our portion lorsver.
In the tempest of life, when tho wave and tho
gale.
Are around and above, if thy footing should fail,
It’ihruo oye should grow dim and thy caution de
part,
'I ti'-.k aloft” and be firm, and be foarlecs of heart
If tho friend, who embraced in prospority’s glow,
With a smile for each joy and a tsar for each
woe,
Should betray ibce when sorrows lika clouds aro
array’d,
“Look aloft” to the friendship which never shall
fade.
Should tho visions which hopo spreads in light
to thine eye.
Liko the tints of the rainbow, but brighton to fly,
Thou turn, and through tears of repentant regret
“Look aloft” to tho sun that is never to sot.
Should they that ato dearest, tho son of thine
heart,
The wife of thy bosom, in sorrow depart,
“Look aloft” from the darkness and dust of the
tomb,
To that soil where affection is ever in bloom.
And oh! whon death comes in terror, to cast
His fears on the future, his pall on the pas*,
In that moment of darkness, with hope in thy
heart, f
And a smile in thy eye, “Look aloft” and depart.
PROPOSALS,
For publishing hij subscription a compendium of
ff>o * k - V .flr-4/.s.r
tosler.
Containing all the statutes, and the substance
of all the resolution > of a general anil public na- ,
tore, and now of force, which have been passed
in said State from the year 1820, to I he year 1829,
both inclusive, with occasional explanatory notes
end references, and a list of the statutes repealed
or obsolete To which is added an appendix,
containing the constitution of tho state of Geor
gia, as amended', also references to such local
acts as relate to towns, counties, internal naviga
tion, county academies, &c. and a collection ofj
the most approved forms used in carrying tho
above laws into effect; with a copious index to
the whole It will be something like a continua
tion of Prince's Digest, noting the laws ill said
Digest, repealed or altered. Ft may be nbso ved,
that the legislature of Georgia are in tho constant
practice of repealing, altering, or amending laws
passed at their previous sossions, so that without
such a digest, or compilation of them, as is now
respcc' fully offered to tho public, it actually re
quire i a lawyer, or a person who has devoted .
much time t ■ the examination and comparison of;
the dill rent enactments of eacii succeeding sos- j
sion of the legislature, to be acquainted with all
the laws which art of force. And having witnes :
.ej with much pleasure the immense public utili
ty and popularity of tho digest compiled by Oli
ver II Prince and also having no doubt but a
similar compendium of the laws from the time of
that publication down to the present with the ad
dition of tho precedents, on forms, which will bo
pl.iced in tho appendix, and which will add great
ly to the public utility of the work, and to the fur
therance of justice would be vory acceptable to
•he public, the compiler has ventured upon tho
arduous and important undertaking. However,
not relying altogether on his own experience of
having boon a member of the legislature during
the passage of ihe most of tho Laws now proposed
to be published, and at tho administration of'
them for eight years, as justice ol tho inferior
court, in a county whero much business of an in
tricate nature is transacted in that court and tho
court of ordinary; alter collating tho manurcript
it has tioen placed in tho hands ofgentlemen em
inent in tho law, who alter a strict and careful
examination have politely tendered to him tho
subjoined certificates.
I have examinod a digost of the Law’s of Geor
gia from 1820 to 1r29 inclusive, by A. Fosto,
esq. atul think tho work executed with great judg
ment and accuracy. The work is intended as”a
continuation of Princo's Digest, and is, in my opin
ion, well calculated to answer that valuaole pur
pose Although the author is not professionally
a Lawyer, he seems, in ascertaining tne statutes
now of force, to have added much care examina
tion and.sludy, to his advantages as a practical le
gislate, during most of the period embraced in his
work.

Augusta, July 23, 1330.
I have attentively examined a Digest of the
Laws of Georgia, from 1320, t 2 1529 inclusive,
aud find the work is executed with much jud„
went and accuracy, by A Foster, esq. of Colum
bia county,. I "have no doubt the work will
prove valuable to every citizen who feels desir
ous to becomo informed of the statutes now of
- > J*co in tho* state, and would recommend all jus
tices of ihe inferior court, justices of the peace,
n.-, \ - to possess themselves of tho
