Stared at,— Willis is enamored of the way
pe ladies of Havana stare at strangers. “The
Spanish lady,” he says, “goes home very dis
contented from the promenade or public resort,
if she was not walked up to and looked at. The
windows of their houses are like halves of birds
cages thrust out from the wall, and as they sit
out in the street, with only an iron grating be
tween them and the passer by, they feel slighted
if he does not slacken his pace and gaze delibe
rately into their dark eyes open to him. it is
nn innocent admission of whatbeauty issupposed
to he made for, and why jewels are worn and
hair braided—to be seen. And this custom, I
think, partly gives the key to what strikes the
straniror as a peculiarity in the phisiognomy of
this people. There is no dodge in the Spanish
eye. In an an, or woman, it comes to you as
fair and square as the side of a decanter—fear
less and unwinking as an open inkstand. It has
nothing to conceal or avoid. It can receive no
offence from another’s look—it can give none by
its own. This seems to me a very great beau
ty. lam sorry for the twenty reasons that
why it cannot be a peculiarity of a “fast” coun
try like ours, with its exciting rivalries, and
civilized improvements upon nature. The
rarest thing in New York is a calm, trusting,
open, and unsuspicious eye.”
Conviction for Peddling: without License
A man by the name of Devine, who had been
engaged for some time in visiting families in
this city and offering for sale dress patterns
purporting to be silk, and who had probably
been transacting a profitable business in this
line, was last week taken up by the city police,
carried before a magistrate, and by him turned
over to the Superior Court, under the act against
peddling without a license. It was proved that
the goods he had been selling, instead of being
of silk, were a mixture of flax, cotton and silk,
and contained of the latter article a very small
proportion. They were of beautiful patterns
and well calculated to deceive. On examination
the figures, instead of being woven in, were
found to be stamped upon the cloth.
From information obtained by the police, it
appears that thirty or forty dress patterns had
% t >en sold in the city, by this man and his ac
complices, at various prices, from five to thirty
dollars each. Devine was the only one of the
party arrested, the others having made their es
cape. It is supposed they went from here to
Savannah.
The Superior Court being in session, the de
fendant was convicted. The Judge sentenced
him to a fine of one thousand dollars and costs,
and to remain in jail until paid.— Const.

Think of it. —A Humming-bird once met a
butterfly, and being pleased with the beauty of
its person and the glory of its wings, made an
offer of perpetual friendship. “1 cannot think of
it,” was the reply, “as you once spurned me,
and called me a crawling dolt/’ “Impossible,”
exclaimed the humming-bird ; “I always enter
tained the highest respect for such beautiful
creatures as you.” “Perhaps you do now,”
said the other ; “but when you insulted me. I
was a caterpillar. So let me give you this piece
of advice: never insult the humble, as they 7 mav
one day become your superiors.’’

been constantly arriving in abundance,— Atlanta

Daring Burglary. —The Store of Hand, Wil

cured it, from their sockets. He examined the i
premises and finding nothing more desirable
helped himself to a large bag of Sugar and a
lump of Tobacco and left.— Chronicle Senti- j

Our Cotton Market has not been very animated this week,
and most of the sales made were forced ones, at a decline
from last week’s prices of from £to3 c. The absence
oi orders here may in a measure account for the decline.
The market is fitful, and closes without much life at about
the following quotations : Middling, 8 Q 83 ; Good Mid

Cotton.— l he news by the Arabia had not been receiv

particularly in the lower grades, which constitute the great
bulk of the supply. We quote low Middling, 7 1 (3 81;

r rM I E season is fast approaching when this valuable manure
X should be used. The experience of those who have used it
proves, (if we believe their agricultural essays, which we do not

trebly paid by its application.
Dr. E. T. Taylor’s experiment applied to pine lands near Col

paid him Gardens are greatly benefited by it, producing vege
