Sybil Hollifield
Sybil Hollifield, 67, of
Commerce, died Thursday,
November 8,
2007, at St.
Mary’s Medical
Center in
Athens.
She was born
in Jackson
County and
was the daugh
ter of the late
Ralph and Montine Parson
Hollifield. She was retired from
Carrier Transco in Athens.
Survivors include sisters and
brother-in-law, Carrine H. and
Warren Brooks, Nicholson,
Christine Perry, Lawrenceville;
niece, Robin Perry; nephews
and spouses, Todd and Rhonda
Brooks, Mike and Bronda Brooks,
Keith Brooks; great-niece, Whitley
Brooks; great-nephew, TJ Brooks;
step-great-niece; and three step-
great-nephews.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, November 11, in the cha
pel of Ivie Funeral Home. Burial
was in the Grey Hill Cemetery.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce,
was in charge of arrangements.

Frances Griffin
Frances Griffin, 102, of
Commerce, died Friday,
November 9, 2007.
She was born on February 5,
1905, in Houston, Miss., and was
the daughter of the late Frances
and Agatha Bush Shell. She
was retired from Bridgestone
Firestone in Athens and also a
librarian at the Commerce Public
Library. She was a member of the
Commerce First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Griffin was preceded in
death by her husband, James
Everett Griffin.
Survivors include a son and
daughter-in-law, James E. and
Lois Griffin, Bogart; granddaugh
ter and her husband, Holly and
Ron Edelstein, Lexington, Ky.;
and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be
held Saturday, November 17, at
2 p.m., in the chapel of Little-
Ward Funeral Home with the Dr.
Carlton Allen officiating. The fam
ily will receive friends Saturday,
November 17, from 1 to 2 p.m., at
the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial con
tributions may be made to the
Commerce First Baptist Church
Building Fund.

Charles Cronic
Charles Henry Cronic, 69, of
Winder, died Monday, November
12, 2007.
Born in Jackson County, he was
the son of the late John Henry
and Lois A. Fagan Cronic. He
was a member of Union Baptist
Church, the Jaycees, and was a
retired contractor, owner/opera
tor of North East Builders. Mr.
Cronic was preceded in death
by brothers, Sam Cronic, Harry
“Red” Cronic and Bobby Cronic;
and a sister, Mary Cronic Greeson
Bowen.
Survivors include his wife, Ann
Cronic, Winder; sons and daugh-
ters-in-law, Jason and Terry Scott,
Jarrod and Susan Scott, all of
Winder, Benji and Mary Cronic
and Bobby and Rene Cronic,
all of Bethlehem; eight grand
children; brothers, Jerry Cronic,
Winder, and Bill Cronic, Port
Jervis, N.Y.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, November 14, at
Smith Memory Chapel with the
Revs. Jon Reed and Hal Chitwood
officiating. Burial was in Barrow
Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may
be made to the Union Baptist
Church Building Fund, Drawer

George Ledbetter
George Hope Ledbetter, 56,
of Greenville, S .C., died Friday,
November 9, 2007, following
complications from pancreatic
cancer.
A native of Danielsville, he
was born on May 8, 1951, in

Velma Chandler Ledbetter of
Danielsville and the late George
W. Ledbetter.
Following graduation from
Carnesville
High School as
Star Student in
1969, he attend
ed Emmanuel
Junior College
and gradu
ated from the
University of
Georgia in
1973.
He entered
Air Force in 1974
through Officer
Training School. While he began
his career as an aircraft mainte
nance officer, he moved to the
staff judge advocate corps upon
graduation from the University
of Texas School of Law in 1983.
He also completed a year of
Air Force-funded study at The
George Washington University
National Law Center, receiving
a Post-Juris Doctorate in environ
mental law, graduating with high
est honors. He retired from the
Air Force as a colonel with over
30 years of service in 2005.
He served at a multitude of duty
stations throughout the country
and abroad, to include South
Carolina,Texas, Germany, Florida,
California and Virginia. His last
assignment was at the Pentagon
as an associate general counsel
(Environment & Installations)
with the Department of Defense
Office of the General Counsel,
where he was counsel to both the
department of Defense Chemical
Weapons Demilitarization and
the Hazardous Waste Clean-up
Programs, in addition to inter
national environmental issues.
His military awards include the
Defense Superior Service Medal
and the Air Force Meritorious
Service Medal with five oak leaf
clusters.
Sur vivors in addition to his
mother, include his wife, Carmen
Mezzacappa, Greenville, S .C.;
sister, Ester Wilson; nephews,
Phillip Wilson, Danielsville, and
Dillon Mezzacappa, Denison,
Texas.
Graveside services were held
Tuesday, November 13, at Hudson
River Baptist Church with the
Revs. Robert M. Peek Sr. and
Troy Herbert officiating. Burial
was in the church cemetery.

Cpl. Leon Shope
Corporal Leon Miles Shope,
78, of Murrayville, died Saturday,
November 10, 2007, at his resi
dence.
Born on October 1, 1929, he
was the son of the
late Miles Wrestle
and Annie Sue
Byers Shope and
was of the Baptist denomination.
Mr. Shope served his country for
22 months in the United States
Army, as a member of the 196th
Field Artillery Battalion in Korea
during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by
a son, Mitchell Shope; broth
ers, Willie Herman Shope,
Hoyt Eugene Shope and J.D.
Shope; brothers-in-law, Clifford
Anderson and Hubert Collins;
and a son-in-law, John Timothy
“Tim” Brooksher.
