Saturday's The Day To Take
Papers To CMS For Recycling
Cheryl Cook is trying to raise
money and environmental aware
ness at the same time.
The Commerce Middle School
special education teacher and
two groups — the special educa
tion classes and the Y-Club — are
collecting newspapers for recy
cling.
Currently, students are pick
ing up used newspapers from
drop boxes in each class and
in the administrative area, but
they’ll accept newspapers from
the public Saturday, Dec. 8, from
9:00 to 1:00.
The corporate partner is
Applegate Insulation and Mulch,
Cornelia, which will pay two cents
a pound or $40 per ton — maybe
more if the school can transport
the newsprint to the Cornelia
plant. The company works with
other school systems to provide
newsprint recycling fund-raising
opportunities and, said Cook,
has a good track record.
The proceeds will be used for
extracurricular events and class
room materials, says Cook.
“We hope to have three drives
this (school) year,” she said.
“We’ll have one in December
and in January and March. If we
do well, we would like to do it
monthly, but we haven’t gotten
that far.”
Crow said teachers are tying
the recycling effort into the cur
riculum in the area of preserving
the environment. She points out
that a ton of newsprint recy
cled saves 17 trees and more
than three cubic yards of landfill
space. Because trees help con
serve water, recycling can also be
related to the ongoing drought.
The school hopes that area resi
dents will save their old news
papers until Dec. 8, then bring
them to the school, where a col
lection bin will be placed right
outside the front entrance of the
building.
