Middle School
Wrestlers Place 10th
In Union Grove Tourney
The Commerce Middle School
Tigers finished 10th in the Union
Grove Invitational Saturday. Its
25-team field makes it the big
gest middle school tournament
in the state, according to Coach
Darryl Ellrott.
The tournament featured an
“A” or varsity bracket, and a “B”
or junior varsity bracket. The
Tigers placed 10th in the former,
led by Chance McClure’s sec
ond place finish at 147 pounds
and Kristopher Hart’s fourth
place finish at 100 pounds.
Team scores were not kept for
the “B” bracket.
“There have only been a cou
ple of times I’ve come away
from a tournament as pleased
as I was with these results,”
said Ellrott. “This is an incred
ible accomplishment for our
program, considering that 60
The Commerce Middle School
Tigers dropped a 32-30 decision
to Athens Academy in overtime
last Wednesday in their first
game of the season.
With 15 seconds left in the
game and the Tigers down
by two, Chase Klugh found
Jonathan Leffew open under the
basket. Leffew missed the shot,
but grabbed the rebound and
scored on the put-back to send
the game into overtime at 29-29.
“This was a very exciting bas
ketball game to watch,” com
mented Coach Adam Bagwell.
The Commerce Middle School
Lady Tigers suffered a 28-11
defeat at the hands of Athens
Academy in the first game of the
season last Wednesday.
“I was proud of the girls’ effort,”
said Coach Adam Bagwell. “They
played hard but were unable to
make shots. Lack of practice
time hurt us. We will work hard
on shooting fundamentals and
percent of our roster are first-
year wrestlers.
“They have improved by leaps
and bounds since the beginning
of the season. We’ve taught them
that Commerce can compete
with anybody, and now they are
beginning to believe it.”
Medaling for the Tigers
in the B-team brackets were
Cody Nation, first at 115;
Taylor Willoughby, second at
137; Garret Wilson, second at
120; Josh Swistak, third at 147;
Jonathan Nichols, fourth at 105;
Brian Whitfield, fourth at 147;
and Jake Vaughn, fourth at 127.
The Tigers were due to go to
Clarke Central Tuesday night for
a tri-match with Clarke United
and Morgan County. The next
match will be at Gilmer County
High School, Ellijay, to compete
in the Bobcat Duals.
“I was extremely proud of the
team’s effort and sportsman
ship. This week in practice, we
will focus on ball-handling fun
damentals and defense.”
Klugh led the offense with
17 points. Leffew added nine,
Jamir James two and Damian
Wood and Jonathan Book one
apiece.
Commerce led 11-8 after the
opening stanza and trailed 15-14
at the half. The lead continued
to change hands and the Tigers
entered the fourth quarter up
22-21.

Drea Mathis scored seven

quarter. The score was 24-11 at
the end of the third period.
