Another Bomb Scare Reported At JCCHS
By Angela Gary
JEFFERSON - A bomb squad
was called to Jackson County
Comprehensive High School
after a “suspicious package”
was found at the school Mon
day evening. It was the second
bomb scare of the school year at
JCCHS.
The Georgia Bureau of Investiga
tion bomb disposal unit was called
to the school. The device was not a
bomb and no one was injured.
Jefferson Police Chief Joe
Wirthman said the “suspicious
package” was found in the gym
by the janitorial staff Monday
night. He said a Jefferson police
officer went to the scene and
evacuated the school after see
ing the package.
“The sergeant on shift looked
and it appeared to be an explo
sive device,” the chief said. “He
cleared the building. There were
some kids there, but they were
away from the gymnasium. No
one was close by but they were
evacuated.”

bomb disposal unit were called
to the scene.
“They got the device outside
and destroyed it,” Wirthman
said. “It was what you would
call a hoax device. It looked like
a circuit board with a battery
wrapped in a lot of wire. There
was no explosive material.”
The police department is in
vestigating the matter further.
The chief pointed out that final
exams were held Tuesday and
that someone could have placed
the package in the gym to delay
the tests.
“We can only speculate on
that,” he said. “We are continu
ing to investigate.”

Local Man Arrested
For Child Molestation
At Gainesville School
A Gainesville teacher who reportedly lives at a Commerce ad
dress has been arrested on four counts of child molestation.
Jerry Norman Jones, 51, had resigned as a third grade teacher
Dec. 11. He was arrested Saturday, Dec. 12, on allegations that he
“inappropriately touched” three 9-year-old girls and one 8-year-old
girl in separate incidents in his classroom Friday, Dec. 7 and Mon
day, Dec. 10.
Another teacher reportedly went to Principal Priscilla Collins
Dec. 10 and suggested that Jones was displaying inappropriate con
duct with female students. The principal called Jones into her office
and talked to him. He agreed not to hug students, but did not show
up the next day and sent an e-mail notice of his resignation.
On Dec. 12, a parent told Collins that her daughter was touched
inappropriately. Collins contacted the school resource officer and
the Hall County Department of Family and Children Services.
Two Charged With Burglary
Of Ridgeway Baptist Church
HOMER - Two suspects in the burglary of a Banks County church
remained in jail Monday afternoon.
Scotty Lee Wilson, 22, of Jefferson, and Phillip Richard Maloch,
20, of Commerce, were both arrested in connection with a burglary
at Ridgeway Baptist Church in November. The two allegedly took
a television set, a DVD player and a guitar from the church. All of
the stolen items have been recovered, Banks County Sheriff Charles
Chapman said.
Warrants were issued for the two early last week and they were
eventually arrested Friday by Jackson County deputies.
Wilson and Malcoch also face charges in connection with the de
struction of three heating and air conditioning units at the church
and the theft of copper wiring from the units. Wilson is charged with
theft of the wire while Maloch faces charges of theft by receiving.
Chapman said the BCSO investigation revealed that Maloch helped
Wilson sell the copper wire.
