Mary Stewart
Mary E. Stewart, 95, of
Commerce, died Saturday,
December 15, 2007, at BJC
Medical Center in Commerce.
She was born in Boone County,
Ind., on March 27, 1912, the
daughter of the late Harry and
Maude Byfield Copeland. She
was a homemaker and member
of Freedom Baptist Church. Mrs.
Stewart was preceded in death by
her husband, Albert Stewart Sr.
Survivors include sons, Albert
Stewart Jr., Commerce, John
Stewart, Malvern, Ohio, and Jim
Stewart, Canal Fulton, Ohio;
daughters, Shirley France, Dublin,
Ohio, and Pam France, Hilliard,
Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and a
number of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, December 19, at
Freedom Baptist Church with
the Rev. Danny Green officiat
ing. Burial was in Greenlawn
Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.

Ralph Dunson
RalphDunson, 88,of Commerce,
died Friday,
December 14,
2007, at Gordon
Hospital in
Calhoun.
Born in
Banks County,
he was the
son of the late
Omer Jackson
and Fannie
Elizabeth Bellamy
Dunson. He was a
farmer and a vet
eran, having served in the United
States Army Air Corps during
World War II. Mr. Dunson was
preceded in death by his wife,
Carrie Crocker Dunson; and a
sister, Dorothy D. Turner.
Survivors include sisters,
Frances D. Boswell, Suwanee,
Saralene D. Cloer, Dalton, Nelda
J . Dunson, Atlanta; nieces, Debra
Crowley and Millie Boswell; and
a nephew, Gary Cloer.
Funeral services were held
Monday, December 17, at the
Solid Rock Baptist Church in
Maysville, with the Rev. Swayne
Carlan officiating. Burial was in
the Gillsville Cemetery.

Dorothy Tatum
Dorothy Mae Tatum, 76,
of Commerce, died Sunday,
December 16, 2007, at her resi
dence, following an extended ill
ness.
Survivors include a son, Cecil
Tatum, Commerce; daughter,

grandchildren;
and 10 great
grandchildren.

Bernice Owensby
Bernice Eloise Owensby, 79,
of Commerce, died Thursday,
December 13, 2007, at Athens
Medical Center in Athens.
She was born in Habersham
County on January 26, 1928, the
daughter of the late Sam and
Clothie Lynch Dodd. She was
retired from Harmony Grove
Mill and was a member of
Madison Street Baptist Church.
Mrs. Owensby was preceded in
death by her husband, Marvin D.
Owensby.
Survivors include daughters,
Charlotte Hardy, Maysville,
Joan Minish, Commerce, and
Wilma Keel, Jacksonville, Fla.;
sisters, Glady Crocker and Sue
Standridge, both of Cornelia;
five grandchildren; and six great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 15, at
Madison Street Baptist Church
with the Revs. Brian Stowe, Carl
Beckham, and Billy Owensby
officiating. Burial was at Grey Hill
Cemetery in Commerce.

Bill Chaffin
Bill Chaffin, 76, of Baldwin, died
Sunday, December 16, 2007, at
his residence.
He was born on June 17, 1931,
in Banks County, the son of the
late Wallace “Jabo” and Willie
Mae Holland Chaffin. He was a
self-employed auto body repair
man for most of his life and
loved attending auctions and car
races, according to loved ones.
He was Baptist and was a vol
unteer fireman with the Baldwin
Fire Department with 14 years
of service. Mr. Chaffin was pre
ceded in death by a son, David
Earl Chaffin.
Survivors include his wife,
Bertie McDuffie Chaffin,
Baldwin; daughters, Betty Ann
Pitts, Calhoun Falls, S .C., Janice
Chaffin Ledford, Baldwin; sons,
Charles Chaffin, Cleveland,
Rick Chaffin, Cornelia, Michael
Chaffin, Baldwin; brother, Bob
Chaffin, Provo, Utah; 12 grand
children; and 14 great-grandchil
dren.

Tuesday, December 18, at
Whitfield Funeral Home with the
Revs. Luther Williams and James
Harvey officiating. Burial was in
Baldwin Cemetery.

Carolyn Little
Carolyn Samples Little, 58,
of Jefferson, died Wednesday,
December 12, 2007.
Born in Jackson County, she was
the daughter of the late Ishmael
D. and Melba
Mathis Samples.
She was retired
from Jackson
County Mental
Health after 30
years of service,
and was a mem
ber of the First
Christian Church. Mrs. Little was
preceded in death by a brother,
Webster Samples.
Survivors include her husband,
Bryan Little, Jefferson; daughter,
Jessica Little, Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla.; and son, Mark Little, Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla.; father-in-law,
Jack Little, Jefferson; sister and
brother-in-law, Brenda and Burton
Riddle, Lilburn; brothers-in-law
and sisters-in-law, David and
Candice Little, Dacula, and Joe
and Lanice Couch, Jefferson.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, December 16, in the cha
pel of Evans Funeral Home with
Minister Michael Jarrett offici
ating. Burial was in Woodbine
Cemetery. Pallbearers were Todd
Samples, Jesse Fowler, Jay Fowler,
Gid Samples, Martin Hartsfield,
Mark Pimpo, Lex Little and Drew
Couch.

Grady Lee Knight, 69, of
Lavonia, died Friday, December
14, 2007.
He was the son of Nellie Criswell
Dempsey of Bethlehem and the
late Grady Melvin
Knight. He was a ~~
residential carpen
ter and was Baptist.
Mr. Knight was a veteran, having
served in the United States Air
Force.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include his wife, Louise
S. Knight, Lavonia; children
and spouses, Ronny and Diane

Judy and Mark Adams, Toccoa,

Sallie Salisbury
Sallie Salisbury,63,ofDahlonega,
died Monday, December 10, 2007,
at the Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville.
Born in Walton County on June
I, 1944, she was the daughter of
the late Robert E. Lee and Sallie
Ruth Dorsey Peppers. She was
a retired textile worker and was
Baptist. Mrs. Salisbury was pre
ceded in death by her husband,
Thomas Salisbury.
Survivors include sons and
daughters-in-law, Lee and Jody
Grindle, Jason and Mary Grindle,
all of Ellijay; daughters and sons-
in-law, Janice and Ronald Pressley,
Maysville; Edith and Shannon
Presley, Dahlonega, Sharon
Presley, Tucker; sister, Viola
Saxton, Gainesville; 14 grandchil
dren; three great-grandchildren;
and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services were held
Thursday, December 13, in
the chapel of Banister Funeral
Home. Burial was at Dahlonega
Memorial Park.

Bertie Bell
Bertie Canup Bell, 83, of
Winder, died Tuesday, December
II, 2007.
She was a native of Jackson
County and the daughter of the
late Henry Lee Sr. and Lula
Walden Canup. She was a home
maker and a member of Winder
First Baptist Church. Mrs. Bell
was preceded in death by her first
husband, John Robert Etheridge;
second husband, Etsel F. Bell; a
daughter, Janice Cavin; and broth
ers, Henry Canup Jr., Woodrow
Canup, James Canup and Ralph
Canup.
Survivors include a daughter,
Linda Howeth, Ray City; step
daughters, Sheryl Case and
Deborah McDaniel, both of
Archdale, N.C.; sisters, Latrell
White, Bethlehem, Lanell
Etheridge, Betty Griffeth and
Anne Hawkins, all of Winder;
brothers, Clyde Canup, Lillington,
N.C., Mack Canup and Donnie
Canup, both of Winder; 13 grand
children; and 13 great-grandchil
dren.

Michael F. Scarboro, 38, of
Carlton, died Tuesday, December
11, 2007.
Born in Jackson County, he
was the son of Fred and Mary
Scarboro. Mr. Scarboro was pre
ceded in death by his fiance,

Jimmy Bassett; and great-niece,
Nicole Vaughn.
Survivors include his brother

great-grandmother, Estelle

Laverne Crocker
Laverne Crocker, 73, of Cornelia,
died Sunday, December 16, 2007,
at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center in Gainesville, following a
sudden illness.
Born in Habersham County on
May 1, 1934, she was the daugh
ter of the late William Tyson Sr.
and Artha Simmons Crocker.
She was employed as a cashier
at Habersham Hardware and
also worked for a number of
years at Cassels United 5 & 10.
She was a member of B.C. Grant
Baptist Church and attended
Alto Baptist Church, where she
served as a pianist or organist.
She was also a member of the
Eastern Star. Mrs. Crocker was
preceded in death by a brother,
Grady F. Crocker; sister-in-law,
Beatrice Crocker; and brother-in
law, Ernest Snyder.
Survivors include a sister, Mattie
Lee Snyder, Cornelia; brother,
M.J. Crocker, Cornelia; brothers
and sisters-in-law, Tyson and Edna
Crocker, Cornelia, Otis and Patsy
Crocker, Greenville, S .C., Robert
and Latrelle Crocker, Liberty,
S.C., and Curtis and Jeanettie
Crocker, Gainesville; sister-in-law,
Virginia Crocker, Cornelia; and
several nieces and nephews.

Elinor Johnson Boyd, 89, of
Winder, formerly of Savannah,
died Saturday, December 1,
2007.
A native of Jackson County,
she was the daughter of the late
Henry and Resha Elder Johnson.
She and her late husband, Ed
Boyd Jr., owned and operated
Boyd’s Drug Store in Savannah.
She was a member of the Winder
First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daugh
ter and son-in-law, Ann B. and
Jim Pilgrim, Winder; sons and
daughters-in-law, Thomas M. and
Pam “Heidi” Boyd, Lawrenceville,
and William G. and Sheila Boyd,

Ronnie Wilson
Ronnie C. Wilson, 59, of
Gainesville, died Wednesday,
December 12, 2007, at Northeast
Georgia Medical Center in
Gainesville, following a sudden
illness.
A native of Hall County, he
was the son of Cora Lee Smith
Wilson and the late former Chief
Deputy Clarence “Bobo” Wilson,
and was preceded in death by
grandparents, former Sheriff
C. W. Cal and Ila Mae Wilson,
Preston and Henrietta Smith.
Survivors in addition to his
mother, include a daughter and
son-in-law, Jackie and Doug
Forrester, Homer; son, Jeffery
Ronald Wilson, Gainesville; sis
ter and brother-in-law, Phyllis and
George Zuloaga, Jacksonville,
Fla.; grandchildren, Elizabeth and

Gussie Mae Smith Ivie, 86,
of Gainesville, died Thursday,

Frank W. and Ella Bell Turpin
Smith. She was a homemaker,
a self-employed seamstress, and
a member of Gillsville Baptist
Church. Mrs. Ivie was preceded
in death by her first husband,
Dab Gravitt, and second hus
band, Lewis Ivie; brothers, Hubert
Smith, Frank Smith Jr., Charlie
Smith, Ira Smith, and Howard
Smith; and a sister, Mary Turner.
She was a wonderful wife,
mother, grandmother and great
grandmother, loved ones stated.
