out. “We’ve probably had more
shots than all but one of the teams
we’ve played, and we’ve probably
out-rebounded all but one or two.
We get ourselves in a good posi
tion to make things happen, but
we’re still learning to shoot with
confidence.’’
CHS vs. Prince Avenue
Against Prince Avenue, the Ti
gers got off to a horrendous start,
trailing 10-0, but climbed back into
the game during the rest of the first
and second quarters.
They cut the lead to 15-10 after
the first period and found them
selves ahead 24-19 at the half and
34-27 after three periods.
“We made a nice comeback,
gradually over the rest of the first
quarter and the second quarter,’’
McCurley said. “We struggled
again at the free-throw line, but
I’ve come to expect that a little. We
controlled the game in the second
half.’’
Brittany Sewell was the top
scorer with 11 points, followed by
Terra Hancock with eight, Felicia
Grier with seven, Lauren Jones
with six and Jessie Flint with five.
Kaylin Canup, Morgan Mather
and Jasmine Sanders scored three
apiece.
“Everyone who played scored. I
was pretty pleased with how bal
anced it was,’’ said McCurley.
— Tigers Pick Up A Needed Win
Cont. from Page IB
who had scored 23 points against
Commerce earlier this season,
and held him to nine. Meanwhile,
Chase Crawford held John Richt,
who scored 19 the first time the
two teams met, to five points.
“I think we had both of those
guys frustrated most of the night,’’
commented Bridges. “I thought we
played well, on defense especially.
We held their leading scorer to nine
points; he’s been averaging better
than 20. We did a much better job
than the first time we played.’’
The Tigers played a zone de
fense against Prince Avenue Dec.
11, and fell 72-45 after trailing 19-1
after one period.
This go-round, the Tigers led
8-7 after the first quarter, 24-11 at
the half and 36-25 after three pe
riods.
Cohen Cooke paced the offense
with 16, but Brandon Romans (13)
and Matt Adams (10) were also in
double figures. Drake Cash and T.
Green scored five apiece.
CMS Wrestlers Are 2nd In Tiger Duals
The Commerce Middle School Tigers finished second to Jeffer
son in the third annual Commerce Tiger Duals wrestling tourna
ment last Saturday.
“Coach Jessie Fowler and I were very pleased with our kids’ ef
forts,’’ said coach Darryl Ellrott. “This is the third time we’ve wres
tled JMS this year, and every time we get better. This time was
much more competitive. There were several close matches, one
overtime thriller and fewer of our kids were pinned.”
Banks County beat West Jackson to capture third place.
The four participating schools wrestled in pool competition, and
two “all-star’’ teams were formed to give all wrestlers an opportu
nity to get matches.
“The Commerce team moms did a fantastic job with the hos
pitality room we added this year, and Northeast Georgia Bank
sponsored the tournament trophies,’’ Ellrott said.
Several CMS wrestlers also participated in tournaments over the
holidays.
Chance McClure reached the finals of the Dixie Nationals in
Atlanta and won the Jefferson New Year’s Classic in Jefferson.
Micah Eason competed in the Dixie Nationals, while Kristopher
Hart and Greyson Cochrane competed in the Jefferson event,
with Hart medaling.

Tiger Wrestlers Place
2nd At Amicalola Classic
Following a second-place finish
to Class AAA powerhouse Gilmer
County in the Amicalola Classic
last weekend, the Commerce Tiger
wrestling team will compete in the
Area Duals Tournament Saturday
at Landmark Christian.
Coach Kendall Love figures his
Tigers have an excellent shot at
advancing to the State Duals in
Macon the following week
“If our guys wrestle well, there’s
no reason we can’t be in the top
two,’’ said Love.
Commerce is 11-1 in dual meets,
its only loss coming to the Drag
ons, so in the Area Duals, the Ti
gers will have a no. 2 seed to the
Dragons’ top seed. The good news
is that the only time the two teams
would meet would be in the finals.
At least nine teams are send
ing teams, Love said; the top four
teams will advance to state.
First though, the Tigers were due
to take on Dawson County and
Habersham Central at home Tues
day night. Results of those matches
were not available by press time.
Amicalola Classic
Commerce’s 138 points were
good enough for second place to
Gilmer County, which is ranked
atop the Class AAA wrestling field
and won with 188 points.
“Fifty points in a two-day tour
nament isn’t a big spread,’’ Love
remarked. “They weren’t in any
danger, but if you look at a couple
of matches that could have gone
differently...’’
Eight Tigers placed.
“Every guy in our lineup won a
match,’’ Love pointed out. “It’s al
ways nice when every team mem
ber contributes to the score, and a
lot of them were one match away
from placing’’
Winning second were Doug
Maloch at 119 pounds, Casey
Drinkard at 125 and Nick Arosteg-
ui at 130. Thomas Sears won third
at 152, Dillon Desean fourth at 112,
Jon Cash fourth at 135, Phillip Ed
wards fourth at 145 and Addison
Davis placed fifth at 103.
